ZF5HP24 R&I extracts from JTIS21 CD FAQ
Hello
I noticed that there have been some recent posts about ZF5HP24 transmission issues.
I have posted the manufacturer (ZF) Repair Manual & their Spare Parts Manual and a TSB on the Valve Body Assembly in recent threads.
Now here are PDF extracted files from the JTIS CD on the transmission removal, installation, Fluid drain & refill, and the transmission specifications (I also included PDF files for the exhaust system that will be needed if you are going to remove the transmission):
Transmission removal 44.20.01.pdf
Transmission installation 44.20.01.pdf
Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill 44.24.02.pdf
Transmission Specifications 307-01A.pdf
XJ Exhaust downpipe R&I 17.50.06 .pdf
XJ Front Muffler 30.10.18.pdf
XJ Exhaust system.pdf
Here is the Filter Removal & Install PDF (added 8/18/12):

My best time for the forward ('A'drum) replacement was 6 hours including a break for a quick lunch. I did not change the the fluid or filter (I did not even pull the pan) because it was changed by another shop to try to fix the slipping (it did not help). I just sat the trans on it's tail and removed the torque converter and the dark bolts from the bell housing/pump assy. I used a new pump-to-case gasket, forward drum piston 'O'rings and all the original frictions and steels. I installed it and checked the fluid level (OK).
If you use the uprated 'A'drum from transpartstech they guaranty it for 5 years. I asked if will hold up if the pressure regulator is faulty and they stated that another drum might fail but not the new 'A'drum.
I have purchased several and they are built well.
If you snap a cataverter stud then that will slow you WAY DOWN but not too much rust here in North Texas.

I haven't been able to find the correct part number for replacement transmission pan bolts. I have a 1998 XK8 non-turbo, 4.0 liter convertible that I believe has the ZF5HP24 auto transmission. when changing filter and fluid in the transmission I striped out two pan bolt heads. After reading this forum I ordered replacement pan bolts and they have a bigger torx head that won't fit due to the limited distance built into the transmission pan. The replacement bolts also were a little longer than the OEM bolts. I think the replacement bolts were designed for the ZF6 transmission found in the newer XK8. Does anyone know the part number for the correct replacement pan bolts?
