ZF5HP24: A Rant and appeal
#21
Is there a difference in engine components lay-out between a LHD and a RHD?
That is, as far as the routing / fixing of this dipstick is involved?
Note: I just finished a call with a manufacturing director of Ford in China.
He has a friend making piping, incl. dipsticks for OEM and after market in China and Taiwan, and will see if they can help us for a special, ''less than nothing in quantity'' badge.
So you guys better hurry ,

hello from the x100 forum. i placed an order for the meruosport dipstick on November 11th. will let you know when i receive it.
on another note, i upgraded to the redesigned A-drum before a failure at 89K USA miles. all of the clutch packs and everything else in the unit remained stock. the fluid in the transmission was changed after 60K miles and again when the A-drum was replaced which was of course a very thorough change due to emptying the converter. the transmission works very well. it could be a nice test case to see if it ever fails for other reasons outside of expected wear.
i strongly advise anyone to upgrade the A-drum prior to failure as it is very easy to do.

easy trans filling port
I been thinking about this a little, after a few hours of sleep.
The tubes are too narrow to try to add fluid into. It would take a while to and the fluid unless you pushed it in with a pump setup. Then if you are able to get fluid into the transmission through the tube it will be awhile before you could check the level because of the fluid in the tube would false reading until there was no more residue on the sides of the tube.
Thinking of using the tube to check the fluid level, or the possiblity of adding a sensor there that would sense when the fluid reaches the port.
As for adding oil it might be possible to find a different way to get the fluid into the transmission. I would have to look at the transmission later, it's 2:30am here, but it might be possible to add fluid somewhere else.
Still running it through my head so your ideas are appreciated.

I've had a little look at what's going on, what I've noticed is that the gearbox has two level plugs high above the filler port. Now I'm not sure what they're for because as far as we know the level is checked by burning your hands and spilling expensive fluid all over the floor. I've added some photos to show what I'm talking about.

Is there anyone who could have a try at making a dummy part for us to work things out? You could use a bit of copper brake pipe to work out the bends, as I said earlier I'm away until Saturday and Eric hasn't got the facility to do it. We're getting close here chaps, lets push on!!

On a side note: Bob, you've been into the ZF box before. How much does it differ mechanically from the old BW boxes (ie. are there any other special tools other than what you'd use to build a typical auto box)? I've rebuilt BWs and TH400s; they aren't difficult to do. I don't need to right now but I wouldn't have an issue with rebuilding it myself when the time comes if I have access to the right bits.[/QUOTE
I haven't done a complete rebuild on the transmission yet, just the A drum repair and the Transgo pressure valve. I have that spare transmission my desk that I would like to do someday. I figure by the time I'm 135 I should have all of my little projects done.
Your best be to get info on the ZF5HP24 is to download the manual from our site. I believe Jim Lombardi had the link in one of his threads.

I’m not sure if this project is going anywhere now, it’s looking like we may have missed the window of opportunity we had with the suppliers Eric referenced to.
If I need to add more fluid to the system in the future I’ll be looking at trying to do it from the radiator end in the engine bay. I’m assuming you just undo the union when the system is cold and add with a pump or syringe.

Good news, just received a notice from the seller, Meruosport, that the dipstick kit is on its way with an apology for the delay. They included tracking information. I was considering contacting my payment processor to dispute the charge a few days ago. funny how things work out.
If anyone is interested in studying the product before installation, let's discuss details.

Yes I'm 3,000 miles into my rebuilt ZF & I get a rough shift into drive on my cold initial start of the day, it shifts perfectly in every other scenario but the cold start harshness spooks me. I've returned it to the shop that did the rebuild, they assured me it's fine, I even went to another transmission repair specialist whom dyno-tested it etc. & also gave it a clean bill of health. If I let it warm up for a few minutes it doesn't surface, also does it less when the ambient temperature is warmer. I guess it maybe one of these older car "quirks" us Jag owners learn to put up with lol.

You may want to try contacting Gary Ferraro on YouTube who has a extensive list of videos on the ZF trans and its issues. He is really good at describing issues and the cause.
I went to his page and put in Jaguar ZF5HP hard shift and this came back ...https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWa...5hp+hard+shift
I didn't watch them yet, but at least wanted to get you a lead.
