Cool $1700 for output shaft bearings/seals on 92 xj40..DANGIT .cant be right !

hey folks ,
can somebody in the know enlighten me on required labor hours for 92 xj40 remove and replace output shaft bearings /seals ?
just got an estimate for $1700 and if memory serves we used to get 1.5-2.5 per side +parts costs and machine shop charges for presing the old off ,new on .
seems to me even if one takes a disc grinder to the shafts [what 15 minutes a side maybe to cut them off] and so long as they dont damage them maybe $35 side mach shop another $25-$35 lube and what u get seems a long ways from the $1700 .

and you say ?

what causes the antenna to stop 1/2 way down and now radio has no power and no code ? does the antenna signal for power to the radio after the ant is up in position as vaguely recall radio came on after ant was up ,not before .
any takers?

really appreciate this forum ! good folks most intelligent and experienced w/these old jags I treasure myself and wont drive anything else but my electric pick up.

thanx all!

Motorcars LTD has the bearing/seal kit for less than $100 each side.
4 or 5 hours for both sides is a good estimate. Jaguar warranty time is a little less than 3 hours so real world time is about 4.2 hours. Even at $100/hr a fair estimate would be...

$420.00 labor
$200.00 parts
$620.00 total

I can get the bearings/seals for less (about $150.00 both sides) so if you are in the Texas DFW area I would charge less for both parts and labor (I'm at $70/hr)

Shop around and find someone who has done the job before so they don't break things and make you pay for their learning experience.

I think someone used to sell rebuilt output shaft assys already to be installed and you send them your worn units. (Motorcars LTD???????)

You can send a Private Message as you have more than 10 posts and 3 days of membership. I have one already built and stored in a plastic bag. I have 5 diffs under my workbench so I could remove an output shaft and replace the bearing and seal for your car so it would only be on the lift for a few hours. I'll rebuild yours and put it in stock. I keep the bearings and seals in stock so I don't need to order any parts to complete a job.

I also have all the pinion and carrier bearings/seals to replace them in a noisy diff.
I used to do the noisy diff bearing repair on several cars a year but not so much lately.

Let me know if I can help.

Default fell off the face of the earth..

Bob just as soon as I am able to put a bit of cash away for this I need to do it soon for sure. Its my only car . I apologize for my disappearing in 2011 but had good/bad reason for same. My little girl was diagnosed stage 3 ovarian cancer . Think she finally has it beat now going on 6 months so far w/all great ,wonderful reports from her oncologist . I am so blessed , I would NEVER wish the stupor ,the disillusionment and despair one finds himself up against on anyone. She's 44 but still my baby girl and it bout brought me friends...thats saying something too. Just like a little puppy dog w/his tail tucked I felt so beat on .
ok. what will swap of output shafts set me back and do you still /currently do the R and R ,or can you refer a pro thats done a bunch of these ? If you would please advise so this way I'll know what I'm up against Like I said i have to save for this but have to do it right 1st time . thanks .,

Hi All, My car is having the diff output bearings done as I speak. Spoke to the mechanic yesterday who was giving me lots of sharp intakes of breath and head shaking and saying things like how much trouble he was having getting the nuts off the couplings. Then he says he has accidentally broken the ABS sensor..I think I am about to shafted I think as well. In my next life I'm coming back as a mechanic.

Job done. Bearings replaced and what a difference. The car is so quiet. Only one bearing was worn, "lumpy" to use the mechanics phrase, but both replaced as a matter of course. My car is 23 years old and it now drives like new again.
The only downside is that the speedometer sensor was damaged whilst doing the job leaving me with no speedometer and apparently this sensor is no longer available from Jaguar.
So now I can have the most wonderfully relaxed driving experience in my Jaguar, all be it I have no idea at what rate of knots I am going!!
"Step out of the car sir."
"It's not my fault officer, I didn't realise I was doing 70 mph, honest."
Anyway the cost of my repair: Replacement diff oil $48
Bearings $74
Labour $512
New speedometer sensor, if I can get one $?
Anyone any ideas where I can get a new sensor here in the UK?
Cheers, Dave.
