Default 1988 VP gasket kit.

Got into the top of the engine just a bit. Did a compression test, one cylinder is at 30 lbs. Been out of the loop for some time now, I’ve searched around a little looking for a gasket kit with no luck at this point.
Still have yet to pull the head, just about to that point. Any advice much appreciated. Sure like to know we can still get what needed. In-line 6, I’d guess there’s no difference with the XJ6 from the same year.

This is the third time that I have started a reply for you. I lost a head gasket about 6 years ago. It was a failure of the gasket between #4&5. At the time I had several choices for gasket kits and a huge variance in prices. Doing a quick search now, I find 2-3 on eBay and "I Think" you could build a complete kit from Barratts. That said, if you only have low compression on one cylinder, there may be another problem. I was lacking the proper cam alignment tool for this motor so I used the one for my 3.8. It worked "ok". There is also a Special tool to hold the upper chain tensioner in place when you remove the hydraulic cylinder for it- it's located behind the distributor so there's something else to remove. Doing this research, I remember that I used a "Payen" branded set. It was complete and fit my wallet. I reused my head bolts as they had no marks on them. Some will say not to, but they were $12 each at the time. At 14 bolts, that adds up. Not sure what else I can say with any authority. Good luck!

Jerry,

Were you a victim of timeout?

When I write a reply that's either lengthy or needs facts checking before hitting Submit Reply, I write it offline then copy & paste when ready. Learned that after losing a few long replies and having to start again.

No, not on the site.... I kept second guessing what I wanted to say and then gave up... so it was my own mental time-out.
