Hi Peter,
Are you telling us that you replaced the head gasket with no manual? You're a braver man than I! How did you know how to torque the head bolts properly, or to ensure that the camshafts were reinstalled in their proper orientations for correct timing?
The factory Jaguar Service Manuals for the XJ40 are not available for free, but they are available on DVD for a modest cost from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (jaguarheritage.com):
Jaguar Heritage. Technical Publications
The Haynes XJ40 manual is out of print but the U.K. edition is available in pdf form at the link below. Unfortunately chapters 7 & 8 are missing from the scan, but the rest of the book is there:

I believe the Haynes manual has the procedure for setting idle on the early cars.
There is a very helpful XJ40 eBook at the Jag-Lovers forum. You have to join to view the eBook, but it's free, and there is a ton of XJ40 information available in the archives of that forum, as well as several very knowledgeable XJ40 owners who frequent that forum but not this one, so I suggest you check it out (jag-lovers.org).
I have not found an engine management system manual for the early XJ40s, but the basic operation of the later cars is similar and you can download the EMS Diagnostic Manual for the '93-'94 cars here:
http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto...stem%20S91.pdf
The EMS manual has a table showing what the resistance of the CTS should be depending on temperature. Problems with the CTS electrical connector and wiring harness are also common, especially on the early cars, so have a close look for corrosion on the connector terminals, broken or deteriorated plastic on the connector, or broken wire or cracked insulation on the wiring harness.
Have you cleaned the ISCV, including removing the stepper motor and cleaning all the carbon off of the plunger and its valve seat? Just don't have the stepper motor connected to the electrical supply while you remove it from the valve body or its plunger can thread all the way out. The valve and stepper motor are a little different on our 4.0L car, but the photos at the link below will show you how much carbon was built up inside our ISCV:

Good Morning Don & Graham,
Thank You for your replies.
Don, Thank you for your extensive and informative reply. I think I should have made myself a bit clearer what I was looking for. Was trying to save time and when I could not find the XJ40 online eBook thought I would ask a quick question on the Forum.
I did all you suggested as well as manufacture my own camshaft line up tool and also have the manuals.
What I was looking for were the resistance values hot and cold for the CTS. Will look for the eBook again and join as I know the resistance values are in that Book.
I do very much appreciate your excellent replay with all the info.
Graham, Thank You for the update.
Thank You both again for the quick replies.
