1989 - Rear Shock re-install woes

Hello:
My rear shocks were already retrofitted with KYB Gas adjusts in lieu of the original SLS set-up. One shock was bad, so I replaced them with new KYBs. I first installed them without bump-stops. Needless to say, they made a horrible racket, so after going once around the block, I parked the car until I could make it right. Now I just installed bump stops and am ready to mount the assemblies back on the car. Unfortunately, I can not get the upper mounts to line up! Yet the last time I did this, they went right in.
Can anyone think of what I am doing wrong this time around? I am at my wits end.
Thanks.

Looking at my parts bin, that whole thing is built up like a macpherson strut and then installed. As I recall, I bolted my top end in first.. the top mount shell things are decidedly directional with shallow side outboard.... I remember it being a very fiddly job but there was just room to fit it in. Hope this helps.
