1990 Vanden Plas door-handle troubles
So the only remotely major issue with my car (which I bought not even two weeks ago) is that the back right door does not open from the outside, but opens fine from the inside.
There is a repair shop a couple minutes from me that specializes in Jaguars, which is where my car was always taken for service by the previous owner, and the quote to fix the issue is $350.
I have the money to do so, as the guy who sold me the car took $400 off the price we had originally agreed upon so that I would be able to get the handle fixed, but others here have suggested I give it a go myself.
Before I even consider it, are there any diagrams as to how things are supposed to be in there, and perhaps a guide on how to safely access the internals of the door?
I'm no stranger to tools, but without some form of clear and concise reference to work off of, my mind cannot properly process what to do, and I certainly don't like the idea of potentially making things worse.

Hi Von Ryan,
I do not have the diagrams for the door handles but I am sure they will be on here somewhere.
But I have had extensive experience in fixing them myself.
It is a very basic system .... lifting the handle pivots a rocker arm which in turn pulls the rod that unlatches the door.
The most common problem with them is that the pressed on washer that holds the rocker lever in place lets go.
I simply drilled a small hole in the locating lug for the washer and then screwed in a self tapping screw to hold it in place.
As far as the dismantling of the door trim and assembly....
I am not sure if it is the same for your model.... on the 88 it is a matter of removing the screws located on the top trim to access this you must remove the inside door handle screw and unclip the clip holding the wire connector in place, then slide the wood grain panel forward... there you should find 2 screws to remove that panel. then you need to remove the crews securing the door trim not forgetting the one holding in the courtesy light (the lens slides off first to expose it) and also under the protective cover for the hand grip (a rectangular insert that slides up to release).
Once you have the trim off.... it is a matter of getting into the door with a 10mm spanner or small socket (this is the tricky part as you are very, very limited for room) and you will find the 2 mounting nuts that hold the outside handle on.
You will also find wires coming off the assembly that lead to large push together plugs that will also need to be unplugged (IIRC central locking, key barrel heater if fitted and manual key turning sensor)
You will also need to disconnect the push rod from the lever... it has a retaining clip that is plugged in to the rocker and the rod passes through it and the clip rotates and slides on/off from the side and locks in place.... (similar to the inside door release clip)
I hope this helps a little... and I am sure someone will be able to direct you to the diagrams for this procedure
good luck

Ok guys, just been reading VonRyans post, after welcoming him in the new member section......a 19 year old Jag owner!!
Kudos to you VonRyan on such a nice car.
Now we all know how tight money can be, especially when you're 19, and having car trouble.
Time for all the XJ40 Gurus to jump in here and help out a fellow Jagger.
