Default 1992 XJ40 Front Seat Headrests

Hi folks, this is one that I've wondered about on and off for years, and never got around to sorting it out.

On the 92 Sov, does anyone know if the front seat headrests are adjustable for height. ie can they be raised.

Nothing I seem to try can get them to budge, they are just about flush with the seat back.

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Hi Richard,

I'm operating off a bad memory, but you should have a headrest button (if equipped) along with the other seat controls on the transmission tunnel. If you don't have one, then your car may have manually adjustable headrests. You may be able to slide your hand under the headrest and feel for a button that releases the headrest. That's how my S-Type's headrest works.

Update: found this fuzzy picture that shows the seat controls. The headrest button is the upper right if I'm reading the buttons right.

Good luck,

Mike

Thank you my friend, snag is I don't have this button layout on the 92 euro. (seats, up , down, and sideways, OK).

Nor do I have a release plug under the thing.

Have even tried a tyre iron to shift the thing, no response.

Me thinks that these H/restraints do not move!

I'm glad you posted this. I thought there was something wrong with mine. I have the 90 VP and they wont move either and there is no control for them on the tranny housing.

Or at least an owner's manual. That should have instructions on how to adjust the headrest height. My guess is that it gets tossed by the time the second or third owner buys the car. I had to buy one when I had my '90 XJ6.

Believe me I have the owners manual and Haynes and a large repository of files that members send to me for inclusion into the FAQ.

Nowhere I have seen shows if this MY headrest is adjustable.

I suppose I could strip the seat for a look see, but knowing my luck I would probably end up with having to replace the entire seat when I had finished.

This applies to both my XJ40s, so I think that I will just have to live with it, until I can upgrade to an XJR

Thanks all for your assistance.

Hi Richard,

If I recall, the XJ6 had like three or four manuals that came with the car. These covered the basic operations, the stereo and anti-theft systems. You could very well be right in that your model(s) may not have the adjustable headrests. Just a wild guess and it probably won't work, but do the switches that control the seat back recliner go up or down by any chance? This might be how the headrest is adjusted.

Just as an aside, my manual for my S-Type has a section on seats to include about 10 pages on just kiddie seats. No doubt written for the benefit of lawyers.

Whatever you do though, stay away from Super Glue.

Mike

Normally I would expect these to be adjustable on all cars, as if the height is wrong for the person sitting in the seat, they are pretty useless at their safety role (anti-whiplash).

On most cars, if you look at the small round chromed escutcheons where the two headrest "prongs" go into the seat, there is normally a little catch on one of them that has to be pressed in before headrest will move up/down.
On my XJ6 (X350 model), , which has power seats, the button for the backrest can be pressed upwards/downwards to move the headrests, (as well as its for and aft movement to move the backrest. This feature, by the way, is a nice "crowd pleaser" if you are showing off the car to neighbours !

Well folks, I too would have thought the above to be true, but this is not the case. There is no visible adjustment feature.

They have one central rectangular type post which is rock solid into the front seat backs.

The rear head rests however are of the adjustable variety as Fraser states.

Useful if you want to obscure the rear window!!

Oh well I have lived with this for around 7 years, so I guess that they will just have to stay put.

Mind you on a plus point, this car also does not have any of that EGR gubbins or Air pump arrangement that seems to malfunction

Hi Translator,

I took a look at my seat/headrest deal this morning ... figured I could get a little more adventurous since my seats are pretty well trashed.

No good news, though. It's pretty much like you said, solid as a rock.
The only thing I could figure was that they aren't adjustable because of the wiring for the rear seat reading lights.
Doesn't really make much sense. I'm sure that could have been accommodated with some clever engineering.

Oh well .....

Hey Retro, perhaps we should Patent, 'The Slightly Longer Wire'.

Could be useful for all sorts of applications.

What do you reckon, think folk would go for it?

Doggone ... what a concept!
I think you may be on to something ...!!
The name even has a certain panache.

"The slightly longer wire".
Sorta rolls off the tongue.

OK, just brainstorming here:

Bored in the bedroom?
Is the missus having too many "headaches"?
Try the patented Slightly Longer Wire
..... tonight!

Yeah that would do it, for the company I was thinking along the lines of;

The Slightly Longer Corporation

That way various product lines could be covered.

'The Slightly Longer Wire',
The Slightly Longer Pipe,
The Slightly Longer Bolt,
The Slightly Longer Winded, (for politicians etc.)
The Slightly Longer Beer,

Well you get the idea, I could go on for slightly longer!

Hi Richard,

Got this from another site and the early XJ40 headrests were in fact, not adjustable. A bit strange that Jaguar did this though.
