Default 1993 jaguar XJ6 rear wheel bearing blew

Hey so I bought this car and inspected the damage. The driver side rear wheel bearing went on it and after looking at it it looks like the hub carrier will have to be replaced so basically I need a new rear hub assembly. My question is which years of xj6s are compatible with the 1993? Any help on getting a cheap solution or know of a place to get that? I don’t want to change the bearing again because the previous owner did that twice already so the hub is the issue I need the whole thing. Thanks

When the aluminum hub is damaged, I just find a good salvage yard replacement and repack the bearings.

The shim/spacer is already setup so messing with all that is a bad idea without dial indicators etc.

Driver's/Passenger side is NOT a good description without a location or indication of RHD/LHD. (WHAT driver's side?)

I don't remember when the speed sensors changed part numbers so maybe someone else can chime-in on that.
If you do get a used part, try to get the entire axle shaft and hub/flange assy so all parts will be present.(nothing missing)

Check/lube or replace the fulcrum bearings also.

I had the RH bearing fail on my 1989 XJ40 at 70 mph in traffic - an 'interesting' experience getting across three lanes without damaging me or anyone else!

Agree with motorcarman to source the full assembly which is what I did (below right).

Mine came from a local specialist Jaguar breaker and they had marked the brake shield to show the assembly was early pattern. According to JEPC, the change was at VIN 594576.

so the problem is I live in Saskatchewan no one has Jaguars barely anywhere here so parts are very difficult to find. I did find a 1986 XJ6 but I don’t know if it’s compatible with the 1993 the guy wanted 600 for the whole car. I also found on eBay the whole assembly with the axle shaft from a 1993 but the problem is it costs 300 but the shipping is about 1000. I’d get just the hub carrier but I also want the speed sensor and that little gear for it because they are wrecked but I don’t think I can get them separately. And I don’t want to deal with bearings. Do you have any suggestions to get the assembly, maybe like how you did?

(Your two (almost) identical posts were automatically locked for moderation. The word "cost" triggered this as it is interpreted as an advert. I've approved this one and deleted the other.)

Although they look similar, you can be almost certain a 1986 carrier is not going to be a direct replacement for a 1993. VIN with associated Part Number is the absolute identifier but I think the change was around 1990.

For used parts, the sources in Canada will be low simply because of the low numbers of Jaguars imported. USA will offer greater possibilities but UK or Europe are likely to be highest because the climate dissolves Jaguar bodies. Google search Worldwide for sources and then worry about the shipping. Finding the right part is your first challenge.

Hi Benkitties,

You can compare part numbers for various VIN ranges of XJ40s at the Jaguar Classic site ( parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com ).

By comparing part numbers for various VIN ranges, you should be able to determine which will fit your car. My recollection is that the hub part numbers from the early XJ40s supersede to the same part used on the X300 (1995-97) and early X308 (1998-), but I may be wrong. Graham or Bob may know of an issue that prevents some versions from working on your car.

The wheel speed sensors were changed for the X300. I can't recall if all the XJ40s used the same sensor or if the electrical connector was changed at some point, but you should also be able to figure that out at Jaguar Classic. If I recall correctly, some of those speed sensors have become very difficult to find.

Please keep us informed.

Cheers,

Don
