Question 1994 XJ6, model i.d. question.

Having just acquired a 1994 XJ6, I would like to know how to distinguish between a base model, Sovereign, VDP, etc. The only identifying emblems on this car say XJ6 (Rt. deck lid). Thanks. David.

Welcome. xj6 on the deck lid would mean it is a base model. The VIN number could also confirm that.

mrtalkradio... Thanks for the information on the model i.d. I thought it might be a base model, but wasn't 100% sure. Time to go parts hunting!! Thanks, David.

The parts for that model are interchangeable. 89-94, 95% anyway.

Hey David,

Congrats on the purchase!

I love my '94. Its technically an XJ40. Its the last year of the model and some believe they got most of the kinks out of it by then.

Check all the local wreckers for any parts they may have. You never know. I've had great success doing that here in SoCal.

Post some pics!

malibudav....Thanks for your response. The 1994 is definately an oddball. Only one Jag in the local yards here, and it's a '95. Of course we don't have too many yards, maybe a dozen within 50 miles, and most seem to only have '05 and newer cars. I'm trying to get some parts from the '95 to see if they will work or not. The yard owner has agreed to bring the car to my house, and let me get what I need, at my leisure. If it works, ok, and not too much $. If not, then it's a learning experience getting the parts off. David.

I forgot to mention that I've also had success dealing with a place called Coventry West (no affiliation other than as a satisfied customer). Google them. When you call there, talk to a Jag salesperson. Many times they have helped me decide which parts I needed. They have alot of knowledge of the subtle and not-so-subtle differences between the various years/models.

They sell hose kits, belt kits etc., and they even have a complete A/C blower assembly you can buy if needed...I'm considering buying one of these.

Anyway this place can greatly accelerate your education in parts for your exact vehicle.

They sell new and used parts and they are kind of close you (Lithonia Georgia).

Post a pic!

You will have fun going through the stuff, but you may get disappointed. 95's were a big change. Some interior parts may be interchangeable. I needed a sub-frame for my 94, and a 95 wouldn't fit. The list goes on and on, including the cigar lighter. The connections were different, and there wasn't even a wire for me to splice the little light! oh well

malibudav.... Thanks for the Coventry West info. Lithonia isn't too far to go to get parts that are available. I'm going to start with the front and rear suspension parts on the '95 to see what interchanges. I need both front lower arm assemblies, and the strut assemblies for the rear. All of the bushing are worn out. There's not a machine shop within 100 miles of here that can/or will press bushings. When I had my repair facility, we had to send stuff to Birmingham or Chattanooga for any machine work (other than speed-related work). Guess I'll try to use the entire assemblies. David.

mrtalkradio.... There are definately a bunch of differences between the '94 and the '95. I had to modify the crankshaft pickup ring to work on the '94, and now have to change the a/c clutch pulley to make a belt work. The '94 is v-belt, and the '95 is serpentine. Got an electric door popper for the driver door, as the latch assembly is screwed up, and the inner handle and rod are broken. Works ok, just a bit aggravating at times. Got to find the parts to repair that. David.

When you are looking for used parts in particular, the 90-91 models and 95+ models are different. You are looking for 92-94 XJ6 (XJ40) parts with some differences caused by the base vs Sovereign vs Vanden Plas differences. At least that is what my FSM indicates.

cuengineer.... Thanks for the additional information regarding model i.d. I have access to a '95, and am going to start removing parts to see what is compatible w/ the '94. Hopefully a few items I can use. Seems that when I trade for vehicles, the oddballs end up at my place....Edsels, Yugos, Reattas, and such. David.
