3 wire crank sensor versus 2 wire crank sensor
My recently repaired and overhauled in so many ways 1994 XJ6 is refusing to start today.
I am looking at the available crank sensors and I see for the X300 cars their is a fairly inexpensive 2 wire crank sensor and the XJ40 cars seem to take a 3 wire crank sensor.
I have spare X300 crank sensors in stock but I do not have a readily available 3 wire XJ40 type of crank sensor.
Anyone know what the purpose of the extra wire is in the XJ40 sensor versus the one used in the X300?

Nevermind, I tried cleaning the various contacts inside the distributor cap and on the rotor but that made no difference.
Then I put on some nitrile gloves to get to the greasy wiring for the crank position sensor (previously prior to the cylinder head reconditioning and head gasket change this past summer, my chain tensioner leaked oil).
I pulled the wiring connector apart and looked at the connections and they looked a little dirty rather than being nice and shinny clean.
On a whim I tried plugging the connector back together and tried the starter again. MAGIC happened! It started up! Wahoo!
