88XJ40 Oil Leak When Not Running - Solved!
The beloved 88 has dripped for years, but suddenly began pouring out oil somewhere when I would shut it down. It did not lose oil when running or driving!
Grant Francis suggested the first likely culprit would be the cam cover gaskets, but I couldn't see the leak. Finally purchased an extension mirror and located the culprit, a 1/8 inch gap in the gasket, extreme rear of the cover.
Pulled the cam cover and the gasket literally broke into several pieces, it being very, very brittle. Replaced the gasket, sparkplug seals and D-Rings.
Perfect! Not only did the gusher disappear, but so did all the other pesky little drips I had seen for years.
With the engine running, the oil was maintained up on the cams and below the gasket level, but immediately on shutdown, it pooled up at the rear of the cam area, above the gasket level, and had been pouring and seeping out.
