Marcus:
First off, welcome to the forum! Your problem must be very frustrating, especially if you have replaced the whole transmission. Did I understand that correctly? Please research in the archives both here and elsewhere on the internet the correlation between a flaky Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and the infamous "limp mode" on these XJ40s and I think you will begin barking up the right tree...
Others will certainly chime in with other ideas. Cheers!

28th instant,
Marcus,
I am sorry to hear of all the labour you have expelled in trying to solve the problem. May I suggest that in future, you meticulously clean on a regular basis, the external casing of the Throttle potentiometer which you will find under the large barrel extending outwards from the engine going into the MAF. This can be seen (often red in colour) if you look at the top of the Oil filter. You will not have too many issues with the tranny or "engine check" lightif do the cleaning I have recommended.
