Default 92 xj6 sunvisors

hey everyone! don't know what they're called. But I need the small clips that the sunvisors snap into. both of mine are cracked and not letting the visor clip in. thanks

The visor clips are color coded to the interior trim. There are three (I think) different colors so you will need the trim code when ordering.

Hey beegee, have you found any clips yet? If not I could make a trip to my junkyard. The two there are both the gold- yellowy color not the more tan color. You could paint them......

thanks all! my trim code is AEM-magnolia. Found a couple of site that sell them for $30 each.. Even Jaguar dealer can still get them. I don't want to pay that much unless I have no choice. I guess mine just got old and brittle. Also have question regarding door locks. My key and new key I just got from England both lock doors, but won't unlock them. Jag dealer will diagnose it for $150.00..Both doors are the same result. Any one ever had this problem???? Lastly and importantly--- Does anyone on this forum ever arrange a meet some where just for the fun of it??? Kind of a show and tell on all these beautiful Jags!!

Do you have tibbe style door keys (like the one below?) If so, do they work in the ignition and the trunk with no problem?



If they do, that suggests they are the correct keys but that the door unlock mechanisms on both doors are worn or need adjusting ...haven't had to do that myself, but maybe someone on the forum has?

ALL TIBBE keys will LOCK THE DOORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The trick is to have the correct key that will turn the other way and UNLOCK the doors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to seem ignorant Bob, but Ive never had this problem and don't understand. Are you saying there is a different key cut beyond the Valet key that will only lock? Or what?????

XJ40 door handles are notoriously weak and often replaced.

The correct way to do the job is to swap out the lock barrels with the broken handle locks - but not everyone does that .
It's possible that if a PO or dealer has changed the handles in the past, your ignition key won't match and open the doors because the locks are not original to the car. If that is the case, throwing $150 at the dealer won't really help anyone except the dealer.

There is a way to get the correct code for the door lock(s) but it involves dismantling the door handles - not an easy or pleasant job, but it can be done.

Worst case scenario would be that both replacement handles are from two different cars and therefore different keys/codes for each side.

ALL TIBBE keys will operate the door cylinder to LOCK the door.

If you insert ANY TIBBE key into the door lock, it will LOCK the door!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ONLY the correct 'cuts' will turn the lock cylinder to the UNLOCK position.
I have six XJ8s in my yard at the moment. I can take a 1990 XJ6 key and LOCK ALL the doors on ALL the Jaguars on my property right now.

I can go to a parking lot with any of my Jaguar keys and LOCK ALL the doors on any Jaguar I find if the door is unlocked!!!!!!

That is just the way it works!!

both keys will work in ignition and lock doors (Jag service said same thing about locking any jag). won't unlock doors. they are the tibbe type. Haven't tried trunk yet. Will wait til next summer to do any deep work. Getting cold and am heart patient. Cold air makes me hurt. Thanks again to all. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving

Oh! key will turn the other way, but nothing happens. Its like a circuit is dead, as best I can describe it

There are diagrams/instructions available on how to read the cuts on the Tibbe style keys, which is fairly easy to read and understand.

TSB 76-64 is the one on the internet that I created from my Jaguar issued paper bulletin.
I copied it and 'morphed' it into a .pdf back over a dozen years ago through several stages. First as a .jpg, then a Word Document and then a .pdf with Adobe Acrobat.
The large file size and poor quality is a result of that process.

Thanks all! Been awhile since being on here. Been alittle under the weather. Talked to a dozen locksmiths. All said they could recode if they had kit. But no one has it. Was suggested to find a salvage XJ6 with same door handles/locks and key. Might be easier and cheaper. Than would have two keys-one for ignition, one- for doors. Any opinions would be helpful. Don't know if I can find these kits or have the patience to tear it all apart

The solution lies on page 6 of the .pdf Bob posted; reading the code on the lock barrel, fig#6.
Of course to get to the lock barrel a door handle has to be removed. Once you've got the mechanism in your hand it's a simple matter to follow the .pdf instructions to read the door lock code.

After you read the code, buy a blank key and find a locksmith that can cut Tibbe style keys. Getting new locks etc is not necessary - the same amount of work is involved and you'd still end up with separate door and ign keys.

If you want to use ONE key for the whole shebang, you might want to try and buy some new Tibbe lock "tumblers" (disks) that agree with your ignition key code. Again, you can read the ignition key code by following the instructions in the .pdf Bob posted.

Jaguar as well as Ford used Tibbe locks on quite a few models and these disks might be available at the dealer? If you can get them you can recode your door looks to agree with the ign key, then you'll be back to stock, ONE key. Worth a try

Oh but on further digging, looks like Ford used 4 different cuts as opposed to Jaguar's three - so maybe the Ford discs on ebay won't work after all

You will need to find a TIBBE key lock barrel with 8 slots (3 cut).
The 4 cut keys/locks have 6 slots. A Jaguar sedan door lock cylinder from 1990 to 2003 will have the correct parts.

Just disassemble the lock cylinder and dump the plates and discs onto a clean rag and start building the correct combination to match your key.

Between the old lock and a used lock you should have enough discs to match the key.
