udabes:
This may not apply, esp. if you are getting a clunk or difficultly putting the car into reverse; but I would research the effects of a flaky or dirty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on hard shifting. A bad TPS (even one that doesn't throw a code on the VCM) is known to be responsible for many a limp-mode.
I'd have your tranny or Jag specialist look at all the easy things first: TPS, fluid/filter, neutral switch, cables being out of adjustment, etc. before taking more drastic measures.
Cheers,
Scott

How long has it been happening Mine has a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd and the light comes on at irregular intervals, when it hardly runs. Disconnecting the battery gets it back running until the next time. Any ideas would be appreciated......Roger.
