93 xj40 - pulled plug boots and oil bath?

Just bought the car, knowing I've got work to do.
Had a coolant leak driving it home that I knew about, but temp gauge sat up straight at 12 o'clock.
Pulled a plug boot randomly as I was screwing around with it and I had 2 inches or so of oil sitting down on top of the spark plug, end of the boot was soaked, dripping. About the same on all 6.
I know these things have crazy amounts of oil, is the "oil bath spark plugs" something normal or did she get hot and push a valve cover gasket (or rings I guess around the plugs?).
No serious leaks around the outside edge of the valve cover, some slight seepage but minimal.
So I sucked out the oil, a good 2 cups out of all six cavities, pulled each plug, let the remaining oil drain down, cleaned all the connections, replaced, started engine (after fixing coolant leak), ran out the oil and ran the car for awhile, checked again, no oil bath spark plugs? Special feature that only engages intermittently?
Not sure I like the idea of those connections soaking in oil...although that's better than water...
Soooo.........

There should be no leaking around the plugs. I have a slow slow slow leak in a couple after I took the cover off once and did not clean up as well as I should (fairly new gasket).
I bet your gaskets and rings for the valve cover were taken off at one point and the person doing the job was too cheap to buy the 6 new rings and half moons as well. If it were me I might just put some RightStuff on it and let her go.
