RE: 94 XJ6 TRANSMISSION PROBLEM
Um, why did they change the cylinder heads...was that part of the evolving into the X300's? Did they have any problems with the different cylinder heads? Because the newer style Cherokee (1997-2001) then ut of production. They changed the cylinder heads in late 99 and the 2000 & 2001 models had TERRIBLE cylinder head issues where actual coolant was getting into the engine and oil...trust me I know..my mom has a 2001. Just a thought!! Didnt know if you knew of ne issues with that change in 94 because I had to awareness of that.

RE: 94 XJ6 TRANSMISSION PROBLEM
While everyone's talking about Transmission problems and such, any idea on why my '93 XJ6's tranny is acting funny. On every few start ups (2-3) the gear lights on the shifter will be really dim and while this is happening, the transmission will not shift out of 1st gear, and when put into reverse or drive, there will be a pretty hard jump. But a few miles of driving and stopping (2-20 miles) the lights will go back to normal and the car will work properly. I've taken it to NAPA and they've tried to play with it and took it to his Jag specialist (Jag dealer won't look at models older than '96), they said they fixed the problem (changed the alt, replaced some connectors) butproblemwasn't solved, I've called him and told him the problem is still here but refuse to take it back until I have an idea of what's wrong, I'm not mad at him because this is a ghostly problem. Any takers???

92 xj40/xj6 sovereign trans ..clunk,trans lite illuminated
what happened today? driving all over ,no problems. stop @ lite ,start to drive away ..sliping trans and lite illuminated . think it made a clunk right beforte it illuminated . let car cool . started ,engaged drive no lite for 10 minutes then clunk .lite back on again and slippage . do 92's have trans issues frequently? if so this beauty will have to find another lover ,i cant deal with it and from reading the posts seems like everyone goes intoa limp home mode ..what good does that do? what does that accomplish and what could have occured? remember hitting a lg. cardboard box an hour earlier on right side front but think it went around the side not under the car . could it have done me some harm? thanx folks new to xj's ,havent had a jag since my 73 xk w/v12 ,convertible ... man what a car that was ,british racing green w/new hartz top and saddle leather w/borg warner auto I beleive it was ,whata fine car till while visiting hawaii it got stolen never to be seen again. loved that car !!

On the driver's side of the transmission you will see an octopus looking thing with wires going up towards the shifter. Loosen the three bolts so that you can move the rotary switch, but do not remove the bolts. Put the ignition in the run position and without the motoring running. Move the rotary switch until the light goes out and re-tighten the bolts. Do not move the rotary switch very much. I would be surprised if you had to go a 1/4 of an inch in either direction.
That's my guess and it's free to try.

We will see how long I can get away with this.
