Auto seat belts fixed

Auto seat belts fixed
I bought my '89 XJ6/40 about 6 months ago and the seller told me that the auto seat belts didn't work, but he had heard that in some cases Jaguar would still fix them if they could get the parts. I paused for about ten seconds, then bought the car anyway. Seat belts are important and have saved my life on more than one occasion. I would have them fixed whether or not Jaguar would do it. When I took the car to the local dealer, the service tech at Harper Jaguar in Knoxville, Tn., looked at me strangely and said he thought the car was too old to be covered under warranty and that there was no recall on them. I was prepared and showed him a copy of the letter by Jaguar saying that they would fix them for the life of the car and a letter by the Feds saying pretty much that they had to. It took some time and a little encouragement by the national Jaguar people, but I was able to get a hold of the service manager. He asked a few questions and said he would get whatever parts that he could and get back to me. Well, today, after about waiting 2 hours at the Jaguar dealer, I now have working seat belts! The service manager told me that he had to go to England for some training and while he was there the subject of my seat belts came up. Even the English people were surprised that the seat belts were still under warranty. I just want to say how pleased I am that Harper Jaguar treated me so well and that they did not live down to the reputation that so many dealerships have. If I ever have the $ to buy a new Jaguar, I wouldn't have a problem going to them to buy it. They even washed my car!! If anyone needs a copy of the two documents about this, let me know an I will e-mail them to you.

dskul1,
That is truly amazing! The issue of those seat belts malfunctioning has been a common topic on the forums for as long as I have owned a Jaguar (since about 1995), and I recall reports that Jaguar was required to repair them no matter how old. But I and many others assumed that by now Jaguar would have somehow gotten out from under that obligation. I'm very pleased that your local Jaguar dealership treated you so well, and your report will no doubt inspire other owners to have their belts repaired.
Thanks for sharing this great story!
Cheers,
Don

Thank you Motorcarman. Got them down loaded. My closest dealor is 5 hours away though, so a little involving for me to get it over there. I suppose I will try to make sure it's not something simple before I take it over. Other than the fuses (I checked those), are there common problems and simple fixes? The belt is stuck in the "closed" (over the shoulder) position. Dskul - do you know what they replaced on yours?

I replaced DOZENS when I worked at the dealer. The winch assy usually fails, but sometimes the upper track wears and damages the cable.
The control module does have some faults but the later/revised ones had a 'hesitation' built in to move the shoulder belt when the key was removed from the ignition switch.
I had a TSB on the revised control module but I don't know if is a paper TSB that I did not copy from my old three ring binders.
I have forgotten alot of these warranty repairs because I have not done them in a looooong time.
I think I still have some NEW parts for my 1992 XJ40 that I sold. Might have some diagonal belts or lap belts. They came in different interior colors.
