Clarifying the Vacuum Servo Conversion for 88-89 XJ40's
Hello all, this is Andrew from Jaguar Specialties. A customer of mine clued me in to this forum and that there might be some misinformation floating around here about our vacuum brake servo conversion for the 88-89 XJ40 models. Sure enough, I did a search and he was right. So I wanted to set the record straight.
The conversion we help owners do to switch to a vacuum booster has NO EFFECT on any other system in the car. The standard brake master cylinder and ABS system remain in place and fully functional. What you will have to live with is very consistent, clean, pulse-free, brake pedal assist, for smoother more predictable braking. This is how the hydraulic booster should have worked, but never did.
Cost- there was a posting here that described the kit cost at $500 not including the booster. Actually, whoever posted that misunderstood. In reality, the actual TOTAL COST of the vacuum conversion is around $500 including the booster, which the customer provides. The $500 figure includes the cost of a rebuilt (not used) booster, typically about $185. Used boosters, which can also be used, run as low as $50, so the overall conversion cost would be far less. Just to be perfectly clear, the kit itself is only $275.
I hope that helps. As you can see this is a very economical way to finally, once and for all, cure these great cars of their expensive hydraulic headaches. Compare this cost with the cost of replacing just the 2 charge switches (just one time, and you know you'll have to do it again some time in the future) and you'll see why this direction makes so much sense. And we now have over 250 of them running around all over the world, RHD, LHD, in manual and automatic transmission cars....
Since we remove the hydraulic system from the car, the rear suspension has to already be standard shocks and springs, or be converted to such (and we, among other suppliers) offer a kit to do so.
Have any questions?? Just Email me.
Thanks,
Andrew
