Smile cranking issue slow start FIXED

I've been having issues with prolonged cranking and need advice about what to do next? The Cat when cold has to be cranked more than I would like.
I've replace egr valve, coolant temp sensor, fuel pump relay. I've tried the key trick but I get a strong smell of gas when I do that. It seems to start right up when warm. Lately the initial idle has been rough for a few seconds than settles right down. She runs great other than the slow start issue.

rob,

Is it possible you are suffering from poor fuel pressure? I would be inclined to check that out, or have your mechanic do so.

Default Re: slow crank times.

Robhair.... I had the same problem w/ my 1994 xj6. Long cranking/starting times when cold, seemed to start ok after warm, or after a drive. Turns out that while the fuel pump was OK (ran a pressure/volume test), and supplying proper pressure, the pressure would leave after a long sitting time. The pump had been replaced w/ an aftermarket pump (a good brand, Walbro), but there was not a check valve to help maintain pressure after sitting for a while. I replaced the pump w/ an original Jaguar pump (although used), and the problem was solved. Apparently the Jaguar pumps have the check valve incorporated in the pump. Good luck on solving the problem. David.

I question the smell of gas that you get when you do the key on/off trick. The gas smell occurs before it starts or after? And the smell is from the engine area or the exhaust?

Good that the fuel smell is not there-my thought was fuel leakage somewhere to get the smell. Have you replaced the fuel filter? If the filter is starting to plug up that can restrict fuel flow and the pump has to work harder to push the fuel thru the filter.

Default fixed

yesterday I spent a few minutes switching out the o2 heater relay on the firewall. I also switched out gas cap filler from a "jag" cap that i bought on Ebay to an old cap that was not a jag cap but had a rubber seal that gave a tight fit. This morning got in and Cat started with no hesitation what so ever!
This weekend I'll experiment with the cap issue and see if I can pinpoint the solution
