Default Dashboard display

I have an 1989 XJ6 with the electronic dashboard. It doesn't work too well; the square info display on the right is messed up. The left side just shows nonsense and the right side nothing at all. Is there a fix for this or should I look for a new dash display? I understand it is a one piece remove - replace. I have found a used one at a car re-cycle (junk) yard. Or, if I decide to replace the whole thing, is it plug and play, use a newer non-electronic one from a newer car that did not have this same dash display, analog? Please advise if you would care to. Thanks!

Hello, I own a 1989 XJ40 with an array of electronic board
there is an article on the web concerning the repair of this type of display
i can you communicate in the MP
otherwise the electronic and conventional instrument panels are not intercheangeables
without significant modification of the wiring

cordially

Hi dskul,

I believe the common cause of your sypmtoms is cold or starved solder joints on the circuit boards inside the instrument cluster. See these threads for more information:

Our member Rob Evenson is knowledgeable on this topic so you might try sending him a private message. There may be an actual phototutorial somewhere online so spend some time with google.

I never had that problem in our '88, and our '93 has the analog gauges, but photos I linked to in one of the above threads show cold solder joints I found and repaired in our transmission control module and fuse boxes. Also, the photos at the links below show how to remove the instrument cluster, which is not difficult at all:

Hi dskul,

It's an easy fix, just need to look over all solder joints on the circuit boards, especially those where the pigtail connectors terminate on the board. I realize I'm a little late to the show, you may have repaired it by now.
