Does it lock/unlock with either the central locking or manually with the locking button? Or is it a door handle issue?
If it's a locking issue (electrical problem with the locking solenoid) have you tried disconnecting the battery, pulling the door locking button up and then opening the door?

Those '88-89 models common with this quirk problem . There is a bolt that needs to be loosen first . It's inside the interior door handle , rectangular plastic clip may cover it . You are also going to remove wood panel .Then, upper door panel needs to be pushed up but be careful and easy . This is what I stayed on my mind others will chime in for sure
