Extra mode for auto transmission selector

Hi
I just got an XJ40 from Japan and I notice the auto transmission selector has 3 modes, not the normal 'sport' and 'normal' positions - it has a third position marked with a '1' with a line drawn across it.
Does anyone know what this is?
Appreciated

I think you bought a later XJ40s .
1 is actually 1/2 and you should use it in winter conditions , it prohibits picking up a higher gear . Say you pit your gear selector in 2 ,it will not be shifter over 2 like a normal auto tranny but in addition to that you will be using less RPM and therefore more traction in heavy conditions

Thanks a lot for that info - this car came with a handbook in Japanese, and I don't understand anything in Japanese. For example there's a picture of the keyfob - is that what they call it - coming apart, and I'd like to know what happens when it comes apart - I can see a bit of what looks like a battery, but can't open it any further...
Any ideas?

OK thanks for pictures. I don't understand where that battery fits, though.
I have the 'valet' key and the other one with the button in the middle. What I want to know is what the button is for, and I notice it comes apart, but I can see no access to the battery...I don't have the square thing in the picture....thanks for your advice.

The other one should be same as mine as you can see in the picture . When you press the growler (button ) you can use it for torch so it lights up for you to see the door lock at a dark area .
Square thing is the remote or keyfob .
The battery I uploaded is for the keyfob as well . I think you refer to how to access the master key's battery . OK, I will take another shot for you to see .
As far as I remember, the battery for key is a watch battery

I checked ebay, but a lot of the chaps there only want to deliver them within the UK, and I didn't see any on the US site.
My car is a Sovereign 1993 XJ40, 4.0 litre engine, automatic, got it last week Wednesday I think - imported it from Japan, 26000 miles, looks like it just rolled off Browns Lane...there are a lot of XJ40s available in Japan in similar condition with low mileage...will upload pictures...

Nice car you have there.
Regards the Drivers Manual we don't seem to have a version for the XJ40 for download (anyone want to scan one let me know).
However we do have the slightly later X300 manual here. OK it is for a later car, but comparing the paper version for the 92 and this one for the 95 there are enough similarities to make it useful to you.

Thanks a lot, but I've already got that one, and a lot of info seems to be missing, judging from what I have seen from the Japanese language version of the XJ40 manual, as well as English pages I have also seen...I just don't understand why an XJ40 manual is so damned evasive - everyone I've checked has none.
