Welcome to the forum Graham,
With a bit of digging I've found you have an XJ40.
(I've moved your post from General Tech Help section to XJ40 section so more members with the same model will see it.)
Can't be too serious when the only change has been a new battery. I expect the guys here can help you.
When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see.
In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

new battery
20th instant,
RE:New Battery.
When either disconnecting old or fitting a new battery, irrespective of other advice, always refit postive (red) terminal first . Obviously then fit neg term'. This has alsways worked for me after I encountered the problems that you are now experiencing.
It may or may not work on your car, but I can say it is the safer way of re-installing your battery.
regards,
Michael P

new battery fitted
this is driving me nuts, fault seems intermittent, car was on drive for several months in humidity (stupid me) all faults seem to be controlled via CPU unit hazard warning, indicators, seat belt warning, out of park warning, door open interior light etc, is it possible that cpu connections are damp or bad? running hard reset seems to work for limited time (minutes) then faults resume.
How long can I safely run hard reset?
can I try hair drier on cpu? where is cpu located?
any suggestions?
1992 XJ40, just changed battery from totally dead one to new one
Help please
