Question Front Suspension - Shocks

So on my 1994 XJ12
I decide to change the front shock with the help of a friend
to save a little money.

Ordered Monroe shocks online
a 45 minute job turned into a 4 hr job because one of the bolts through the bottom bushing was seized, but we made it through.

After a few miles of driving
you can hear a loud clunk sound and squeak

Re-tightened the shock, sound still there.

My friend believes it's the shock stem rubbing,
and that there must be a missing mount (maybe rubber) to keep it in place
I've looked on some parts websites and was unable to find anything.

The shock that came off the vehicle were not original and looked as if they were "doctored up" so that's no help.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! I corrected your post per your request. I think you will earn editing privileges after you've made 10 posts.

A couple of possibilities come to mind. First, your Monroe shocks may not have come with the correct top bushings and washers, or your existing shocks may have been missing some of the required washers. See the photos at the link below and compare them to what you had to work with:

Welcome to Jag-lovers - Members Photo Viewing Page

Also, it helps to "preload" the lower shock bushing before tightening the bolt. To do this, support the car on a jack stand under the front jacking point. With the lower shock bolt loosened, place your jack under the spring pan and raise it until the weight of the car just lifts off of the jack stand. This simulates normal static suspension load. Now tighten the lower shock bolt.

Please keep us informed.

Cheers,

Don

Your the Man,
That's what I seem to be missing
The yellow foam bushing and the locating washer,

Where can I buy them?

Thanks

Ok, on SNG Barratt
I found this Isolater
and this cup washer

Before I order,
do I need one of each for the top and bottom, or just the bottom?
Or anything ales?

Thanks Again

Hi Jeff,

A great place to answer questions like this is jaguarclassicparts.com, the parts service of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. There, you can follow the links for your model and VIN number, then view parts diagrams and lists of part numbers. Here are a couple of diagrams:

If your VIN number is 629827 or below, your parts may look like this:

If your VIN is 629828 or above, your parts may look like this:

And since your car is an XJ12, your car may look different from either of the above - I don't know for sure.

But all of that to say, yes, you will need two foam isolator bushings (Parts 9 in the top diagram, Parts 8 in the lower diagram) and two locating washers (Parts 10/9) and one flat washer (Part 11 in the top diagram, unnumbered in the lower one).

Note that one cup washer and bushing goes on the underside of the wheel well, and the other set goes on the upper side of the wheel well and is topped by the flat washer and nut.

One more thing to be aware of is that the original bushings are made of an expanded yellow foam rubber. These are soft and tend to wear out in 5 years or so, but they provide the ride and smoothness the Jaguar engineers intended.

There are aftermarket bushings that are solid rubber (usually black) that will last far longer, but they do increase the harshness of the ride, to the point that after trying them, I replaced them with the OE yellow foam type again.

P.S. The SNG Barratt links don't take me directly to the parts you were viewing - just confirm with SNGB that you're getting the correct parts for your '94 XJ12. If they don't have the right parts for your car, check with Coventry West and Jagbits, who are also forum sponsors and offer discounts to forum members, and check with Welsh Enterprises in Ohio.

Cheers,

Don
