Fuel gauge
Hi! new here and have question. just bought 1992 xj6 vdp. with 63000 actual miles. up til now only been putting 10-15 dollars in gas . Gauge has been working. Decided to fill up for road trip. gauge not registering at all now and low fuel light on. Whats up??? I know there is at least 18 gal (us) in tank. Plus, I noticed slight fuel smell in trunk and no spillage.

I would hazard a guess that the sender unit is the problem, run the tank down, after half the tank has been used you can remove the boot/trunk cover behind the spare tyre and access the sender unit.
Use a brass drift to release the clamping ring and withdraw the unit. Check for continuity on the resistor track.

gas gauge
Don't know what happened. Now gauge is working! Live on stone road with potholes. maybe one jared it lose. Have to keep eye on it. Will be taking to a Jag dealer in Roanoke, Va. tomorrow. Automatic seat belts malfunctioning. Was told they're under some kind of warranty/recall by jag and will be fixed for free.

Mine does odd things as well when it's below 1/3rd of a tank. It will drop to near empty, then full empty, then jump back up close to 1/2, and repeat in that order in 10 minute cycles.
I credit that to quirks of a nearly 30 year old car, and I generally don't let it get lower than half a tank anyways.

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
Congratulations on finding such a nice XJ40. It's gorgeous!
It is not uncommon for the fuel sender to begin to operate intermittently as it fails. The sender is part 13 in the diagram below. It is secured to the side of the tank by the lock ring, part 14. Part 15 is the sealing ring or gasket. The fuel tank is behind the back seat and is accessed via the trunk, behind the carpeted trim panel.
Regarding the seat belts, I will be anxious to learn what the dealer has to say. The last account I read on this topic was that Jaguar is legally bound to repair the inoperative automatic belts, but the parts may no longer be available.
Please keep us informed.
Cheers,
Don

gas tannk seat belts
to all thanks for reply's. Talked to Roanoke jag. very rude and said he couldn't find my vin on jag data base. said no recalls. Called Richmond jag, found my vin on jag database within seconds and said yes there is a recall. its considered a warranty for life. But I need to bring car to them to see what parts are needed. so, hopefully a lifetime warranty means parts where put back for it or maybe a simple fix. hoping track got pinched and won't let it travel Thanks for tank schematic. It will come in handy. will keep updating. Recall number I found on internet is #93V179000. also found a recall for fuel filter. But don't think its jag directly but Fram #06E043000. Looking for a decent leaping jag to fit 92. I have a gold medallion right now and don't care for it. Found one on ebay for 25. Like to find one a little cheaper.

Beautiful car!
I have a 1992 as well. Do not let the dealer push you around on the seatbelts. Print a copy of the TSB if you have to when you go in. The seatbelt system is warrantied for life. My motor/winch assembly needed replacement and my local dealership did it for free. Whatever you do, do not touch the system yourself or have any other mechanic try to fix it because they can and will claim that it's been tampered with.
If it's not working right, use the emergency latches which should be in your glovebox.
And its not a "recall" per se, but a TSB which clarifies Jaguars obligation to provide a lifetime warranty.
Ive heard that Jaguar has sourced new manufacturers for these parts and have started production to allow for future repairs.
My driver's side belt has been acting up, where the belt goes rearward, and latches, but the end switch doesn't seem to be closing, so the motor will continuously cycle due to a thermal overload switch in the motor. This will cause my blowers and lamps to dim every 5 seconds while the motor draws amperage.
I need to have them look at it

seat belts
thanks. will be taking it to jag in Richmond, va. At least that service mgr said there is a warranty on it. needs it there to see exactly what's up with it. nice 2-3 hr. drive. drivers belt will go back and lock in fine. But when you open door to get out, it goes forward and stops about half way across the top. for now I let it lock in place and pulled fuse and detached belt. Tired of hitting my head on it. Passenger side works fine.

Wow, quite a drive. I'm lucky mine is only 15 minutes away. I'd imagine they won't have the parts in stock so you'll need to make a trip back for service once the parts are in.
Be sure to print a copy of this bulletin and bring it with you just in case:

fuel gauge/seat belt
Hey to all. Took my XJ6 to Richmond, Va. jag dealer. very professional and friendly. Found my vin and the seatbelt warranty in seconds. parts are ordered. But now I have two questions regarding 2 other problems that creeped up. First is I am getting a thump- rattle on the right front. Guessing its either ball joint or shock tower bushing. Easy enough to fix. Is there two bushing per shock (lower/upper)? Second problem is more complex. I am having a power drain. If I drive car everyday, its fine. But if I let it set for a couple of days, battery is to low to start. I had battery, altenater, starting system checked. All are okay!. Jag service mgr. thinks it might be a relay somewhere stuck. I sat in car for 1/2 hour one night in the dark to see if interior lights stayed on or hear any electronics making noise. Nothing!. Anyone else have this problem??. Anyway, Jag said it will be $150.00 to trace drain, and they need to keep overnight. OH! Gas gauge has been working fine. All the mechanics at jag loved my car. They were all standing around looking at it. Sales mgr. appraised it at or about $6000. Which is good, considering what I actually paid for it. I was shocked to say the least! Question for all. Do you all have any time of year meet somewhere???? Would love to see all the Jags and meet other members. Well, good day to all and drive safe.--Thanks Bee Gee

IF you have the patience, you can test relays to see it they work. Just remove one at a time and apply 12v to the coil terminals and feel/ listen for the click, check for continuity between the other terminals with 12v applied. Its time consuming but you'll learn a lot. Got to get my seat belts fixed too. My closest dealer is 2-3 hours also. Maybe I could get a "Phone-In Warranty" Good luck, nice car.
Also, if you dig into that fuel tank make sure the fuel level is below that lower opening. Don't ask how I know that.

The Haynes Manual has quite a bit of information on relay locations, etc., and you can download a U.K. edition that is missing a couple of chapters here:
Haynes Jaguar XJ40 Repair Manual
For more detailed information, the Jaguar Electrical Guide is the authority. You can download the 1991 version here, which should be applicable to your 1992, though I'm not sure it shows the circuits for the motorized seat belts:
Jaguar XJ40 Electrical Guide 1991
You can purchase an combined 1991/1992 edition here, but again, I don't know if it shows the motorized seat belts:
Jaguar XJ40 Electrical Guide 1991-1992
By the way, it saves other members a lot of time if you add your car's year, model and engine details to your signature line. I had to scroll all the way back to your first post to find this information.
Cheers,

What battery do you have in your car? I know it's probably not the source of your problem, but there were problems with frequent short trips and battery discharge.
Jaguar switched from a Group 47 (55ah) to a larger Group 48 (66ah) battery as a running change in 1992. Cars after 653469 were supplied with the larger battery from the factory. Earlier cars may have been retrofitted per the TSB.
I mention this because EVERY battery fitment book/website will spec the smaller, original-spec battery. Many times, the proper Group 48 battery is replaced with the DIN 55. Mine was the smaller battery when I purchased the car, and I mistakenly replaced it with the same (incorrect) size. It wasn't until I did some research that I found the problem.
If you have a VIN greater than 653469, check under the hood and see if the battery completely fills it's tray. If not, your battery is not the correct size.
Does your car have the dealer-installed alarm with the Jaguar one-button RF Keyfob? These units can draw large amounts of quiescent current.
If you have a DVOM, you can pull the fuses one at a time to see which circuit is drawing that current.

Battery is bigger one and tested ok. Thanks! Car is in the Jag shop now and the belt system is being repaired. They're keeping it and are going to diagnose power drain problem. I googled battery power drain problem and found an old Jagaurforum letter from 2010. Said the automatic belt system was the problem 80% of the time. May be covered under the belt warranty. or at least partially covered. Brown Jagaur of Richmond, Va. has it. Very professional and helpful. Highly recommend. The Roanoke, Va. Jag is going to get a nasty report to Jag corporate. THe service mgr there said he couldn't find my VIN, no warranty exists and Jag doesn't work on older Jags.. Browns found VIN in seconds on Jag database and warranty on belts. Got parts in just 2 days. Will update as soon as I can.

seatbelt fixed
Got seatbelt fixed-no charge! After power drain diagnose, determined it was the battery. One I had was only 600 amps. Factory original was 900 amps. power drain draw was with in normal factory parameters. So I bought a Jaguar battery (900amps) for it. So now its wait and see.
anyone have experience with brake light dimness? Found out my right brake light and third brake light are bright. But my left brake light is dim. Thanks

beegee,
Thanks for updating us on the seat belt and batery issues, and congratulations on a good result.
Regarding the dim brake lamp, I guess the first thing to check is the bulb connection inside the socket. On our '93 the center electrodes tended to lose some of their spring so they didn't press against the center contact of the bulb as tightly, leading to heat that softened the solder on the bulb and exacerbated the problem. You can try swapping another bulb in to see if that helps.
But if the socket and bulb are OK, see Larry's thread at the link below about poor solder joints on the circuit board in the tail lamp:
