Default fuel pressure regulator? maybe something else? (starting problems)

so my 1991 xj6 sovereign has been giving me quite a hard time in terms of starting. it will start sometimes, usually when i give it a little gas or i use starting fluid. because the fuel pump works and the fuel filter has been changed, im assuming the fuel pressure regulator has gone awry. im not quite sure exactly how to check it or replace it correctly. any tips??
changed parts:
1. spark plugs
2. sparkplug wires
3. ignition coil
4. battery
5. oil filter

Does the car only have trouble starting cold or is it hard to start when hot too?

If only at cold start, there's a pretty good chance the coolant temperature sensor is acting up. It's located at the front of the engine at the left and is fairly affordable.

If you undo the fuel line at the FPR, you should first de-pressurize the fuel line by removing the fuel pump relay and running the car til it quits. Replace the relay and undo the connector at the FPR. Try to get some means of catching or absorbing the fuel about to spill out, then crank the engine.

If the regulator is OK you should see a strong stream of fuel. Messy test but it does work.

A shot in the dark... crank sensor? or cam sensor?
