Fuel Pump

Hello from a new member! My XJ-40 acted like it was running out of gas while in traffic and finally died. I used to be able to slightly hear the fuel pump run when i first turned on the key but now all is quiet. I suspect the fuel pump is gone. It is the original with over 100,000 miles on it. The filter was replace every 10,000 miles. Could someone please tell me if there is a thread in this forum which would tell me the correct way to test the pump and how to go about replacing it? Thank You, Steve.

Steve,
As you are new, WELCOME to our side.
No mention of the year model we are sorting here, as the pump did end up inside the tank somewhere around '92. The earlier pumps were external, LH side under the car from memory?.
The fuel pump relay, again year will determine where that is located, si a very common failure item, and yours may as simple as that.
Might pay to add your car details to your "sig", then we all can sort whatever is asked much faster/easier.

Bentas:
Welcome. Agreed about the fuel pump relay. I would check that first. There is also a way to 'jump' the relay by connecting a couple of the pins in order to get the fuel pump to run continuously. This is from somebody who knows far better than any of us:
"Try jumping the terminals in the fuel pump relay base (pins 30 and 87 the
ones that form a 'T' ) to see if the pump will run continously. If it does
then the fuel pump itself should be ok."
Cheers!
