Default Fuel pump issues. (For real.)

My fuel pump went bad, and I've replaced it 4 times in 2 months. Why am I frying fuel pumps? The car runs for a few days, but once I put more gas in the car it dies.

Hi Wannabeted,

That must truly be frustrating!

Have you confirmed that the problem really is the pump and not the fuel pump relay or an issue in the wiring harness such as an electrical connector, ground point, break in the wiring?

You can test for 12V at the fuel pump electrical connector. While cranking the engine there should be battery voltage on the Blue wire with Red tracer line. If not, you can work your way back up the circuit until you find the point of the fault. You can download the Electrical Guide here:

Jaguar XJ40 Electrical Guide 1990

I guess my last question would be, are you buying good-quality Walbro, Airtex or Bosch pumps (probably all the same pump these days), or are you buying the cheap Chinese pumps on eBay?

Cheers,

Don

Have you drained your tank and checked for rust?? the pump is before the filter and must push all the junk from the tank to the filter.

Default Much thanks for the replies!

I'll give you guys the rundown on the work that has been done in the recent past... Let's see if this helps.

02/18/2015
Tune up (Replaced spark plugs and fuel filter)

03/19/2015
Check for no power (Replaced fuel pump and tank sending unit.)
(Rebuilt high-pressure fuel line from tank to fuel filter)

07/06/2016 (Repaired leak in air pump system.)

04/13/2017
Running poorly (Tune up. Replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor.)

05/01/2017
Check car for no start (Removed and cleaned gas tank. Installed new fuel
pump and filter.)

And here we are. I've replaced now (4) fuel pumps and sometimes the car will start and I can drive it for approx. 40 mi. and then it won't crank. My mechanic is a wonderful mechanic and I've had nothing but honest dealings with Him for the past 10 years (So I know that he's honest.... He's had PLENTY of opportunity to take my money... And hasn't) HOWEVER... He's the first one to say that he's not an expert on Jaguar. I can't say for certain what brand of fuel pump(s) have been installed on this car but at this point, It wouldn't hurt my feeling to just have a factory Jaguar pump installed but at that cost, I'm scared that whatever's frying out these other pumps will fry out a factory part as well. Thanks again!

The tank has been cleaned at LEAST 3 times. (With each of the new pumps that have been installed.)
