Hello all, need advice please. 1990 XJ6 70000 miles
I sold my xkr 2010, i am not driving like before and its a total different approach now.
I am interested in a xj40 1990 70k miles.
and there is another one with 12000 km 1989 but i do not like the front headlight, but i wanted to post an image of the interior that is really beautiful. I am also looking for an aston martin db9 2007-09.
I want to know what do you guys think about the cost of maintaining this car and driving it 5000 to 10000 km a year?
I know I had a 1984 xj6 van den plas and it drives me "a plat" like 1500$ a month to maintain when I was driving it well until I burned a head gasket 4k repair and result in loss of power.
Here i upload a few images of the engine.
any advice and comments will be appreciated. thank you, Pierre

I have a Jaguar Sov, 1990, manufactured in July of that year. It does not have seat piping or picnic tables. May I suggest that you property identify the correct model first by investigating the manufacturing date which you will find in the engine compartment on either the left hand side or RHS inner wing. Have a look opposite the air filter. They-the date- is stamped into the metal.

jagxk2008,
I have an '89 and what I can tell you is there are two systems prone to repeated failure. They just happen to be inter-connected, the Self leveling shocks (SLS) and the brake system. Both utilize the same hydraulic fluid, the infamous green mineral oil.
I've had my car for about 15 yrs, and had I heeded the warnings back then, I would have saved a few thousand dollars not trying the keep the OEM systems in tact. Even Jaguar produced Technical Service Bulletins to replace these systems. I did replace the brake system to a traditional vacuum booster system and converted the rear system to traditional shocks....no regrets. The conversions cost far less than maintaining the original systems and haven't had to touch them since, with the exception of normal maintenance.
Other anomalies are the solder joints on a variety of components, but once the solder is redone, that is usually a fix that never has to be revisited.
Another issue is the door handles and the poor quality of metal used for some of the linkage parts, there are plenty of posts on the forums to assist with a final fix so that can be eliminated.
Normal maintenance issues aside, the TPS requires attention to ensure it's free of debris and the XJ40 does not like dirty grounds, so add this house cleaning to a regular schedule.
Good luck with your decision.

Hi Pierre,
The interior with the contrasting piping appears identical to our '93 Vanden Plas, except our car has an airbag in the steering wheel. Even the pattern in the leather seats is identical to our VDP.
I don't think you would like that car at all. Please give me the seller's phone number and location so I can call him to complain about how clean and beautiful the interior and engine bay are. :-)
Cheers,
Don

The black one is a Vanden Plas and it is quite a nice looker, but the price is very high for an XJ40. Since it has the analog instruments and Sport mode switch for the transmission, I can only assume that if it really is a 1989 model, it is equivalent to a U.S. 1990 model with a 4.0L engine and probably a 3.58:1 differential, so it would be a very nice car to drive, similar to our '93. That interior is really beautiful and certainly looks as though it has only done 12.422 Km.
The white one is also offered at a price that would be considered very high in the U.S., but it also looks like a nice car.
I think my poor attempt at humor was lost in translation. I was trying to say that "I would like to own that black Vanden Plas," but I paid only 6.900 Euros for our 2004 XJR, so despite the low mileage, I would want to negotiate a much better price than 10.800 Euros for that 1989 XJ40.
Let us know what you decide!
Cheers,
Don

Well that black VDP might seem a bit pricey as they go, but where the heck could you get a 1989 Xj40 with less than 8000 miles on the clock??!!! [at ANY price]
The XJ40 is the last of the "real" Jags and this is basically a brand new 89 VDP - could be a really smart buy, despite the higher price.

Hi Don and Lawrence,
thanks for your comments, I also agree that these are the real last jag for me too, the range from 95 to 2002 will do too for me.
Thanks for your advices guys, I emailed to the guy with the green ones and no responses yet. I was thinking like you re the 12000 km original by looking at the seats but then I saw another xj 1990 with 120k with the seats in the same condition, so I am unsure now as i think there is a lot of mileage changes in spain sadly.
sometimes for this matter buying a 120k km is more legit...or due to the car running everyday is often better.
I have not done anything yet I want wait to save more money. I am also looking at a db9, but its hard to go from a 2010 xkr to a 2007 db9.
it be cool to see these cars in alu or cheap replica being made. Anyway...
when i see problems on brand new cars and the stress, not to be able to fix something right first time, I think these are cheap to own and the driving pleasure will be there for sure.
