Default The history of the "40"

Hello my fellow "sleek" Cats and Happy Holidays to you and your families. While I was skipping around on youtube I ran across this video that had me beaming with pride after I watched it. I'm assuming that most of you XJ40 owners have already seen it, if not you will be in for a treat. As a topic of trivia conversation, I would be very interested to get your views on it. When time permits, please give it a looksee and give us your impression. TIA.

Cheers,

VP90

I finally got around to watching this. I had put it off since I thought it was one I had seen. Its interesting to me how they show the testing of the door handles in extreme cold temps, and brag about all the miles and miles of testing (including waiting on trains) but yet we still end up with weak handles and differentials that "just need replaced." Both of mine have been and I'm not one to be very hard on them. Anyway, what WAS that squeak in the right rear????

Hi Jerry, Happy New Year and thanks for your input about your issues with the "40", I guess this is the first time I'm hearing about the diff issues, on which car and what was the mileage before you noticed the problem? Was the fluid changed periodically and what exactly went wrong? You're right about the door handles, I've seen many posters' complaints on them, especially in cold weather.

Cheers,

On my 92 the side bearings went out and ruined the spider gears. That was about 170000 miles and became. I had changed the fluid in it previously. I had it professionally replaced. In hindsight, I should have done it myself. On my 94, It had already been replaced when I got it. I am not sure if it was age or the accident it was in. This ones' pinion bearing went out and I was able to replace the whole unit rather than repairing it. When I got the car I made many repairs to it including changing all fluids. The car now has 153000 miles, I do not know what the mileage on the second unit was. I have it set aside for future repair. There a few threads on it, mine included.
