On my 88 XJ40 (6), there is no cap over the sight glass on the reservoir, If the HSMO level is OK, it shows green, if mineral oil is needed, it should be RED. To refill, there should be a small dust cap on top of the reservoir where the hoses are attached, pop that off and the tube on the mineral oil bottle will plug in there. Castrol 5966 HSMO , Jaguar part number 27LM9886. It comes in a squeeze bottle with a special tube for filling the system. If you do not have one yet, it's wise to get a Haynes Manual #49011, it covers 1988-1994 XJ6's
Hope this helps you.

I dont know about anyone else. But getting the right mineral oil is tricky. Getting it with the correct filler nozzle is next to impossible (i live in Florida).
I did eventualy find a mineral oil source but no nozzle.
SO!
How does one get the oil into the filler port??
Pondering the issue for a while...
I got an empty bottle of lucas (or anything with the thin nozzle) and trimmed the end to fit into the filler hole, then I cut the bottom off the bottle. Then used a 3" bit of wire hanger to press the plastic ball down and hold it open. After that, slip the bottle and nozzle over the wire and slip it into the filler hole. Bingo bongo a funnel!! :-P
