How to replace security system IR remote with RF

The car is '94 4.0 S, one of the latest VINs.
It has the IR remote for the security system. It's not much of use anyhow, because you have to be really near the car, and have a clear path to the IR sensor.
Thus I'm planning to replace it with the original RF remote, and would appreciate some info about the procedure. Can it be done by simply just unplugging the IR module and plugging in the RF receiver module? Or do I have to change some other stuff, ie. the security module?
Programming the RF module is an another story, already read about that. But before buing the fob and the receiver it would be nice to know what other things I should consider.

Hi,
Begs the question, just how far away from the car do you want to be in order to lock/unlock it?
If your remote system is working at all, you are already in a minority.
One of the forum members phd12volt is very much into car electronics on a professional basis. If you do a search of his posts you might find something about after market alarm systems using RF and cell phones etc.
Cheers,

I could tap in an after market system if I wanted to, as I know quite a lot about electronics.
However, I don't know that much about Jags, yet. I want to keep the alarm system original, and any info about the original system(s) is welcome.
