Hey,
I'm glad you will be keeping your Jag .Actually, I like X300s too and what's more I owned one of those beauties too . Nonetheless, I must tell you that late XJ40s are always my faves .You can still feel a classic authentic way of bewitching in X300s too .Well, 6 way gauges ,door trims , door panels,location for A/C control buttons and some buttons sprinkled around the steering wheel . I can't say and feel the same for X308s .
I ascribe from what you said about your seats you should have a base model '93 . '94 XJ12 seats are my faves in regards to the design wise following by Sovereign seats which are vertically striped and stitched lol
X300's engine performs slightly better but not a big deal should you ask me .
It'sa very rare occasion such an XJ40 lover is available like you lol . You know purists never liked XJ40 due to the fact that it looks . I'm strictly against them .Rectangular headlamps, design to the tail lights are awesome

I currently own both a late XJ40 and a X300 XJR. I guess the X300 is a better car but as much as I like the XJR I adore the XJ40. The styling is... wounderful, basically,I have the twin headlights but to be honest I would prefer the rectangular ones. It is hard to describe but the forty has more feeling to it. I bought the car almost a year ago for no money at all, no servicehistory and I dont think it has been very well taken care of, but still it has proven to be the most reliable of friends, it never misses a beat. It is resonably fast, does great mpg, it looks amazing... as I said, I adore it

XJ40 is the ****! Nice to see another student here, I´m a law student at Stockholm university. No problem keeping two jags, the insuransce is quite cheep here in Sweden, but sure, I work really hard at my to jobs to finance the maintanence. The XJ40 is cheep to run but the XJR consumes a lot of fuel, so I´m thinking about trading it for a S-type R. I wont sell the XJ40 though, I guess it is worth around 3000 dollars, and I know I wont find a better car for that kind of money. The registration plate says "PJX 715" so I call it the PJXmobile (sounds a lot better in swedish!).

I god one year left in law school, but I´m thinking absout takom some extra courses.

The S-type R is amazing, but suddenly I got this urge for an XJS, we´ll see. I guess it is down to which one pops up first in the local ads. How kind of you to offer to take the XJR off my hands, I´ll think about it

Actually saw a XJ40 Insignia for sale a few days ago, do you have them over there? I have a vague memory that they sold Insignias in the US back in 88-90, here in Europe they sold them 93-94, as a special model with hand stitched dash and special carpets etc. A really nice and quite uniqe car.

For how long are you staying in England? Great place to stay, I like it a lot.

Love that plate on you car! Where can I see some pics?

A few of mine;

It's probably less expensive to buy an 88/89 model with quad lamps than to do the swap. You must change the bulb failure modules, too.

I´m also a student (with a part time job), I bought the cheapest XJ40 I could find, a -93 Sovereign, no service record and 230.000km. I have driven it for 20.000km and had no major problems. Some minor electric faults like the fans but a friend helped me out with that one so it was a cheap (=free) fix. I know that the headgasket may fail some day, and that the selfleveling suspension may cause problems but so far so good.

My car is very well used, as I said, the cheapeast I could find and no servicerecord or recipts, and it still works just fine.
