In the UK where we do have coded radios, it's a 4 digit unlock code. When a coded radio is fitted, the vehicle originally has 2 code cards in the Vehicle Document Set:

Attachment 118074

This is an example from an X308 I had.

Where do I find that plaque please?

Hi Sheryl,

I have moved your post from a thread in the forum for the X350 to the forum for the XJ40, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 1991 or 1992 XJ6.

The security code for your radio is 4 digits and was originally printed on a card included with the Owner's Handbook and other literature. If you don't have the card, look inside the covers of your handbook to see if an early owner or mechanic wrote the code there.

If you can't find the code in any of your documents, there is a way to modify your radio in order to use a known code. Let us know, and if necessary, I'll post the procedure for you.

Cheers,

Don

Hi Sheryl,

It is common for the radio to require a security code if the battery voltage has fallen too low, or if the battery has been disconnected.

Paula Jayne at the XJ40.com forum posted a procedure for modifying your radio so that a known code will unlock it (6543). Other users took her idea and figured out ways to jump pins to make different codes work. See the thread at the link below:

Resetting XJ40 Radio Codes

Cheers,

Don

Someone mentioned that the Jaguar dealer may be able to match the code to the VIN if the radio is original to the vehicle.

Does your display show --CODE--?

I seem to recall that there is an inline fuse in the wiring behind the radio head unit that may or may not be shown on the wiring diagrams, which you can download at this link:

Jaguar XJ40 Electrical Guide 1991-1992

Which reminds me, have you checked the fuses in the fuse boxes? Off the top of my head, I think the regular radio fuse may be in the center console fuse box, but I may be wrong and it could be in one of the A-pillar fuse boxes.

If your head unit truly is dead, search eBay for a seller who is parting out a similar car. You may even get lucky and find a good used unit with a known code.

Cheers,

Don

Not to hijack,... but I cant help it. I looked at the link Don put up for the code reset on xj40.com. I think the idea was suggested there but i'll put it up here too. Is there a super double secret list of pin combinations so that we could deduce the current code of a given radio? Looking at the drawings there I cant really see any pattern of a simple on/off system to it.

Or, failing that, could we begin to build a reference chart of codes with corresponding pin combinations so that eventually we could learn a missing code from this built up chart... hmmmmmmm

When I worked at the dealer I would often 'scribe' the radio code on the underside of the bonnet up near the latch peg. (it was a common practice at the dealer during PDI)

Many times I would talk to people on the shop phone when they asked how to get a code.
I told them to look for numbers scratched into the paint under the bonnet and there they were!!!!!

Can't hurt to look.
