Default Just got a 91 XJ6 Sovereign - Starting to regret it

Hello, I’m in the US (note the XJ6) and picked up a pretty clean XJ6 with 79k miles on it. When I test drove and peeked around all systems were a go. A week later I’ve been driving it and several issues have been popping up. Hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

1 - radio gets no power to the unit
2 - A/C doesn’t work, prev owner said it just needs freon (that’s what they all say)
3 - Heat only blows when it’s on defroster mode
4 - Lamp out light is illuminated but I’ve checked all lights a million times and don’t see any out.

and for the more important problems I’d like to solve asap
5 - anti lock brake light is illuminated. Went out for a few minutes after spraying the cars grounding wires with degreaser but came back on (maybe electrical issue?)
6 - This issue is on and off but was worse today. When I come to a stop, the oil pressure gauge drops to 0 and the oil light comes on (engine oil is full)
7 - check engine light is on with VCM reading Fuel Fail 22
8 - coolant temp gauge not reading

That’s all I can think of at the moment, but I’ve only put 40 miles on it and I feel like I’ve been duped. I really like the look of the car and the smooth ride, please help me get it sorted out. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums Zak,

I've copied you post to XJ40 forum for advice from members with the same model.

Average faults, all fairly straightforward to remedy. No time to itemize solutions at the moment but area of main concern is oil light and that is just a failure of the sender and they indeed "all do that". You have plenty of oil pressure. Heater speed issue is failed a darlington transistor in the blower circuitry. We all have replaced those at one time or another.

These and all other solutions to your issues listed are readily available in the archive, just search each topic and you will see you are not the first person to run across these problems. Welcome to the XJ40 btw!

Thanks Lawrence. Do you have a part number or name for the issue with the oil pressure?

This site is a good start looking up parts and part numbers.

https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/

Rockauto also is a good source for aftermarket bits and pieces also.

here's a thread about oil pressure senders

It's very likely a brake light. I had this in my now departed XJ40 and it took me a while to twig to the problem.

For the ABS, you ll need to jump the wires in the trunk at the ABS computer. There is a procedure to do it if you do a search on this forum. I had the same issue and it turned out to be one of the wheel sensors. Simple and easy to fix. Fuel fail 22 is indicative of a failing fuel pump but the connector on the purge flange is known to give problems with arching. I had the same issue and rectified it by eliminating that connector and directly wiring the fuel pump.

And dont regret it, these cars are incredible machines and extremely straight forward and easy to work on!

Hi Zak,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums, and congratulations on acquiring a low-mileage Jaguar XJ40!

I have owned 2 XJ40s over the course of about 20 years, and aside from the commonly-known issues, mine were reliable and wonderful cars that put a smile on my face every time I drove them.

Here are links to a few reference documents that will be helpful as you sort out the current issues and maintain the car in the future:

Haynes Jaguar XJ40 Repair Manual

Jaguar XJ40 Electrical Guide 1991

Jaguar AJ6 4.0L Engine Management System / OBD1 Diagnostic Guide

Many other helpful documents are available at jagrepair.com, a website hosted by our member Gus, where many Jaguar technical documents have been made available by our member motorcarman (Bob Gauff), a former Jaguar dealership mechanic and one of our top forum gurus. Note that some of the XJ40 documents are incorrectly filed in the XJ6 & XJ12 area at jagrepair.com.

Cheers,

Don
