Default Key Fob Question - FIXED

That's not a big deal for me but I would like to know though .So, sometimes my keyfob works perfectly and opens/locks the door from a few meters away . However, sometimes I am just near the car and press it a few times and nothing happens .
My question is do I need a new battery or security system glitch ?

Hi Caddy,
You could try changing the batteries, it might make a difference, but from my experience my fobs either work or they don't. ie they don't go dowhill slowly so you have to get nearer and nearer the car, they just stop all together.

One thing you might like to test is to see if the line of sight between your fob and the center radar type sensor unit makes a difference. It does for me.

Mine works better from the front of the car and is not so good diagonally from the rear.

I still reckon that you are in a happy minority, because your's does work most of the time;-)

Also for some strange reason best known to the car, I can sometimes make a difference by manually cycling all the locks and then going back to using the key fobs!

Cheers,

Hey Translator,
Thanks for your message . I noticed that manually cycling the lock and using the key fob works all the time which I can't understand lol .
Mine can either work at any angle or not at all too .

I think the culprit is the connector for the battery

Hi Delta, I spotted your Key Fob post this morning over in the electrical section. Unfortuately this will not work with my 92 and 93 XJ40's because the Fob is totally different.

These older units have a separate key and a one button long rectangular fob containing 3 x 2032 batts.

You can pull them apart by removing the batt storage clip and then prising out an internal plastic curved cover to get at the circuit board but that is about it.

There are 4 tangs, 2 per side in contact with the batts, and these can be bent inwards to aid contact pressure, they can also be lightly sanded to clean them.

Going back to your post, is it not possible to bond the contact strip/spring into place with a drop of Super Glue on the reverse side? Don't know, because I don't have one.

Cheers

That is a really good idea and if anything else then goes wrong, you can rule out the connection.

The other thing I thought about (Delta) was that your problem could also be related to the PCB connector lug being worn. I would not recommend Super Glue here, because you would never be able to take it apart for a batt change.

But maybe a drop of a soft neoprene type adhesive could help prevent it shaking loose. (down the hole in your pic three).

simple & effective : great, since new fobs are horribly expensive
