db,Thank you as you pointed out we found the module . There are two of them one (you told me ) running the exterior lights and the one next to it turns on / off the interior lights .

these are relay modules - more than one relay per module.
You only need to replace the one with the yellow base - DBC10009 for your outside light problem.
I can't remember off hand what the other modules do, but it is written on the top of them. As far as I know, only this yellow based module is a regular failure item.
When you take it out be careful with the little tab which secures the module - they can get a bit brittle sometimes.

Hi Guys !
I'm new here, but I have maintained my 1988 XJ-40 for over 16 years now ( 300,000 miles ).... also own an XJ-8. The rear tail light problems are caused by cold solder joints in the tail light control modules. I put up with this problem for years before finally bending the tabs that hold the metal covers on these modules and taking them apart. What I found was two circuit boards that are connected together by sockets and pins .....the two circuit boards plug into each other. After time, the solder joints crack around these pins and cause intermittant grief. Take a small pencil soldering iron and heat up all these connections at these sockets and add a little fresh solder to strengthen the connection. It only takes 15 minutes to remove these modules, take them apart and repair them. It's well worth the effort. I also had a problem with a crackling noise on my radio...the amplifier modules in the radio had the same problem...resoldered about 40 connections and good as new !

Its always a good thing to do a search before posting a new thread. This is right on the mark. Except, its my front "parking lights," that don't work. All others do. I changed the 009 yellow relay to. I have been through the fuses, all looks good. Maybe the actual switch that turns on the head lights and parking lights? Nothing happens at all in position 1 from the switch. I have to use the "fog" switch(s) to turn on the rear parking and tail lights. Any help here? 94 xj6
Upon further investigation, it seems the master control switch in the second position (b) should turn on all front and rear parking lights, tail and number plate. It doesn't. I will assume its the switch. Because the switch I was using, that I thought was turning on the rear lights is the rear fog guard light. Which I presume are different than the rear parking lights. Is there a master relay for all the parking lights? Or do I go with my assumption and either fix or get another master light switch?
