Default missing relay/switch...is it needed?

I have an'89 XJ40 Sovereign.....inside the trunk up on the left hand side is a relay that holds 3 or 4 switches. There is a switch missing and on the cover it's identified as some kind of ignition switch (the other 3 switches are actually in place). Could someone tell me if this switch/relay is required or is supposed to be empty? I'm at work and the car is about 1500 km away right now, otherwise I'd go out and take a picture. The car seems to be running fine without it.Thanks.
