hey guys my 93 has had a very small oil leak for oh about a year now, bout the size of a penny or dime everytime i went out there. But ever since I did my own oil change on her about a month ago with Mobile Full Sysnthetic 10W-40 (I always use 10W40) the leak seems larger. At first I let for the first week after oil change any residual oil trickle to the floor thinking maybe I didnt tighten oil filter enough?? I havent been back under to tighten again since though. I just got back from nyc today and that would be my car sitting for 3 days in the garage and I pulled it out to notice at least a small puddle of 4, maybe 5 half dollar coin sized puddle all in the same accumulated spot on the floor??
I hope I dont have to do any kind of headgasket job thatll be 500 bucks or more because I dont have that kinda money right now...is there any mixture like that Lucas brand oil something or nother that I could add to oil to slow leak or similar help?
Thanks guys, much appreciated!!

first thing to do is find the leak
possibly as simple as cam cover gasket
then again head gasket is possible as well
oil is pretty much your discretion
me personally have always used 20/50 castrol in all of my pre 97 jags
as well as this is the oil viscosity most if not alljag dealers use on pre 97 cars both 6 and 12 cyl

Time to get back under the car, and don't worry about the head gasket. The leak from that source will be closer to the right front, dripping off the block from where the distributor is located. Your leak is on the other side of the engine.
Get a spray can of Brakleen with a straw, and clean off all around the oil filter. Make sure the filter is tight, there's nothing wrong in tightening it up a little with your oil filter wrench. Just below the filter is a "C" shaped aluminum housing. In the middle of the "C" is a 13mm locknut, which holds it onto the oil filter head. This housing is a bypass to replace the oil cooler hoses that were used on '88-'92 XJ6: it's the same oil filter head on your model, they just deleted the cooler for '93.
Once this bypass housing is clean, run the engine and recheck it. You may have to drive the car for a day... but my guess is that this is your leak source. If you remove the locknut in the center, the cover pulls off. Inside the cover are two short pipes, about an inch long. Pull the pipes out, sometimes they come out with the cover, and you'll see an "O" ring on each end of the pipe. They will be hard as a rock, and that's what's causing the leak. I think the part number is CAC 5158, you need four, coat them with vaseline and put it all together. I know you're not very experienced working on your car, but if you can get the locknut off, you can do the job. You'll lose maybe a half quart of oil when you pull it apart, so be prepared for a mess but it's not like everything is going to come out.
ibjags is correct, 20W50 is best for XJ40 in warm climates. Use 10W40 only if you live in a climate where you regularly see weather below 40 degrees F. The 20W50 turns to peanut butter below 30F.

thank you both. i actually looked up in the back of my manual and it in fact recommends castrol oil for the jag. But when I store it in my garage for the winter months it def gets to 40 degrees or below out there...is there an inbetween oil that would suffice so I dont have to do an oil change right before winter with different oil??
Secondly, I have tomorrow off so I'm hoping to get back under there and poke around at a few things again...only thing is my oil leak IS coming from the front passenger side area...not directly under the oil filter, which is only reason why I brought up head gasket worries...I still hope thats not it.
I'm familiar with the O rings you spoke of too, I've had to do a couple of those on my Cherokees because they start to dry rot and cause small oil leak, it was like a 2 dollar part, just a pain to do. Hoping same job on Jag would be ok but that area is VERY hard to work with near filter. there's zero room for any real movement, I cant barey get both my hands in there to work! Unless I'm missing some kinda secret trick there!?

hey guys, another thing. I went to buy the 20W-50 Castrol GTX yesterday or at least check it out, I was initially looking for 20W-40 but couldnt find it anywhere. My manual shows 20W-50 to be used in 90 degree and up climates, which is def not Buffalo, NY. We get 70's and 80s in summer which is why I stick with 10W-40 year round, it keep my oil pressure good, I dont have to worry about it crapping up over winter when I put it in the garage for almost 6 months. Plus a few ppl have told me that once you'v used Full Synthetic oil you SHOULD NOT go back to regualr oil??? Is this true? My mechanic has been using 10W-40 dont know which brand, before I started doing my oil changes and I, not giving her nething but the best now. Any advice or tips from here on out??
Also, 10W-40 helps my oil leak since it's thicker, at least I think it does!
