Point of No Return
Friggin A'. I just gave up trying to sell the ol' XJ40. Im still too attatched to it and I think it not selling on ebay 4xs or locally over the whole summer were signs from god telling me to keep it!!
Anywho, shes going into the mechanic shop this week hopefully Im just waiting on some parts I ordered. This is the To Do list that I wanted to accomplish this summer but figured not to dump enmore money into it since I was trying to sell it.
-Full Tune Up and the fuel filter (2 things I didnt do at the 90K mile service thing)
-Front Brakes...theyre sqeakin like a bitch rite now!
-Alignment
-Test the relay for those damn cooling fans because theyre def NOT kicking on. Ive let it run warm and see if they did. Narrowed possibilities down to the thermostatic switch or the relay thanks to some of the help from u guys on here too! Hopefully its one of those since those are much cheaper than the motor!!
-And finally....Im going to have my mechanic at least check out the oil leak she has to see if he can pinpoint where its coming from...whether head gasket or whatever...Havent exactly decided if Im going to have the fixed til spring though..$$$$. My brothers Cavalier was just in for a bad oil leak and it ended up being like the crankshaft seal or something, only cost him like $120 to fix. I dont have that kind of luck...
So there it is guys...everything to get done before the end of October when she goes in for the winter. Looks like you guys will be stuck with me for a LONG time because Im running her to the ground. She just hit 97,000 yesterday! Im almost thinking about selling the Bimmer in the spring, buyin a Jeep again and using the extra money to get the Jag completely repainted either same BRG or like jet black!

I'm sure we're all glad that you're sticking with the XJ40. Best of luck packing the Jag away for the winter, wish I could do the same, but we mostly have rain, rain and more rain in the bay area. Hey, if you do end up getting her repainted, I'd say go for BRG again. I've seen a couple of repainted cars lately, and you have to pay alot to get it done well... nothing worse than having a door frame or engine bay in another color.

haha i know thats what I was thinking too...itd prolly be less expensive to do it BRG again I thought about the paitning of the inside of doors, engine, ect. sounded like a pain in the ***. Plus Id feel pretty dumb knowing the inside was green and the outer was black! lol. Im going to look into the pricing this spring.

RE: Point of No Return
The deeds have been done! Full tune up, new front brakes/rotors were just done. I picked her up on the way to school this morning and shes back in my arms...lol. So glad I got that done. My mechanic checked out my tiny oil leak and tested it with the dye in the oil. He had it running for a long time on the lift, off the lift and it sat multiple nights because they had it for a few days. He could barely see anything and he assured me it had nothing to do with a head gasket leak...that took a load off my mine! Im just **** when it comes to this car and that small leak puzzled me since sometimes it would be there on the floor some mornings and other times not!
***On the other hand, he also checked out what I REALLLY wanted it there for...the damn cooling fans/running warm problem. He let it run for like a solid hour and he found that exactly when the temp gauge hits the notch above normal the fans kick on. When it goes back to normal they kick off. (meaning the upper fan is for cooling, appraently the lower fan is for the AC which doesnt work neways). He watched the fans work and the gauge back and forth for a long time so the fans DEFINITELY WORK. According to the Jag repair book I have and where my mechanic gets his info the fans should kick on at 212 degrees F and kick off at 186. ***My question is to the Jag experts on here WHY WOULD THE COOLING FAN KICK ON AFTER THE CAR STARTS TO RUN WARM??? SHOULDNT IT BE KICKING ON SO THE CAR REMAINS AT THE NORMAL OPERATING TEMP?? Do you guys think that THERMO SWITCH for the cooling fan attatched to the radiator is not working properly do to its age and is reading the temperature too late by time the fan kicks on? Obviously the relay is fine if the fans are working. Your answers will be GREATLY APPRECIATED GUYS.
P.S. Last thing to do for now is get the alignment done tomorrow morning. She'll be as good as gold...well, at least for a few days until something else breaks...haha.

RE: Point of No Return
Hey ther
New guy here,
I may not live in the US any more but 700!!? Gimmie a brake, do it yourself. It's not a hard car to work on. They just see Jag and think dolla's! In addition I don't trust a helluvalot of mechanics etc. ALWAYS get a second opinion. No matter how nice the guy is etc. If his kid needs new shoes, he's gonna find a way...
As to your heat fan issue, it kicks on JUST above the N for normal? i.e. the needle half way? THEN THAT'S FINE!
It's there to AVOID overheating, it's designed to work in conjunction with regular road cooling. Souns more like your afraid something is wrong than that something is... again this depends on where the needle is going. There's a reason there is that much space between the middle where the needle shouldnsit and way to the right where it goes in the red. That area is considered "Normal operating temp" although you don't want it going far above the N (so no more than 3/4ths) ideally. Unless you live in 100F weather...
Seriously though on the front end, does it pull? Does it excessivly chew up tires? Does it... Does it? You get me? It's an older car, you can either keep throwing money at it and wish it would be like new but it won't work. Bushings dry out, gaskets dry out things break. Fix what's essential for health and safety and otherwise enjoy the car and just drive it!!
Enjoy,
David

Yeah, she pulls a bit and makes some noise, but it's all part of owning a Jaguar, I say. I'll probably end up doing it after the winter. I've taken her in to a couple of mechanics, they both gave me that laundry list of things to fix.[:@] I have a nice reliable Camry and a zippy Cherokee to drive in the meantime anyway, so hey, I'll survive.

RE: Point of No Return
In the winter in Canada, where cars are considered 'consumables', I'm putting my brother's 1990 Sovereign back on the road, specificallyfor the winter. He has always maintained it was the best car he ever had for winter driving. He even gave me the extra set of softee compound tires/rims, which he called the Jag's 'snow tires', hahaha. Not for nothing did I spend hours repairing the heater blowers which others might call aircon blowers.
