Test the black wire at the sender for continuity (low resistance) to a good ground, such as the ground point on the left inner wheel arch.
Test the sender by checking for continuity across the two terminals in the sender connector. The schematic shows the sender as normally closed, but it may require a magnetic field to close (I seem to recall that it is a reed switch).
The Orange/Purple sender wire connects to the Instrument Cluster by way of a black 36-way connector either in the left dash area or behind the left footwell side scuttle trim at the base of the A-pillar. If your other tests are inconclusive, it might be worth disconnecting and cleaning this connector with zero-residue electronic contact cleaner.
Also, since you're having trouble with your Instrument Cluster lights, it would be worth pulling your IC and cleaning and re-seating the electrical connectors on the back of the cluster. It could be that the same connector that is affecting your lighting is also interrupting the coolant low sender's circuit to ground.
Cheers,
Don
