Radio code 1992 xj40 vin # 649709
Hello all,
I just finished putting the interior together in my (new to me) 1992 XJ40.
After putting the radio and AC controller back in to check that the AC controller is doing its job, I noticed that the radio is asking for a CODE.
Since I bought this car from a pretty much unknown source with no history of the car, I tried contacting the seller to see if he knew. No response yet.
I played with the buttons randomly and now the radio says "WAIT"
The car starts, but since I do not know how the radio and the security system is linked together, I am here asking for opinions, while I read up on how the system works.
Is the radio code needed only for the radio?
Since the car starts, Is there a delay between start up and the ECM not seeing the Security code and then will eventually shut the engine off like it does on some other cars?
What is the best way to retrieve the Radio Code?
Do I go to the Jaguar dealership with the title of the car to have them give it to me?
Thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware, the radio code is only for theft prevention of the radio, and does not interact with the ECM or starter circuit to shut the engine down or prevent engine start-up.
I had to order a replacement key for a 93 xj6 parts car last year from the local Jaguar dealer. When I picked up the key they gave me a printout with some of the vehicle's data, including the radio code, So hopefully a dealership can give you the code for little or no cost.

Hi Sanchez,
The radio security code was originally delivered on a small document that came as part of the Driver's Handbook literature. At least for some model years, the document had perforations so the area containing the code could be punched out so that it was about the size of a credit card or business card, and this was to be slipped into one of the card-sized pockets in the folder that contained the Driver's Handbook. Some owners or dealers also wrote the code on the inside cover of the Driver's Handbook.
We have also had reports from owners who found the code written in grease pencil or paint marker near the battery, under the hood, or under the trunk lid. The code is 4 digits so you might look around for a 4-digit number written somewhere in your documents or in your engine bay or trunk.
If the dealer can't help, it is possible to modify the radio so that a known code can be used. Keep us informed and if you get to that point I'll find the procedure and post it here.
Cheers,
Don
