recommissioning a/c system
All Right guys and gals, my turn has come around again.
The A/C system on my 92 has been on sabbatical for several years- I know, bad on me for leaving it go. It died when the compressor guts disintegrated and apparently got sent throughout the system (which I didn't think about in time...) so I bought a used compressor, had the system charged up and it worked for exactly 2 weeks then suddenly stopped cooling at all. i gave up out of frustration. Now I am replacing everything that is available with new except for the evaporator. I have the muffler soaking in metal cleaner/ rust dissolver which claims it can be rinsed away with water. This only leaves cleaning the evaporator effectively without removing it. Does anyone have a flash of brilliance for me as far as either method or chemical? Thanks as always.

Im still poking away at getting the system reassembled. I ended up plugging the lower connection on the evaporator, hooking a short hose and funnel to the upper connection and filling the unit with my "metal cleaner/ rust slovent". I let it soak for 2 days (my schedule not the instructions) and rinsed it with several gallons of clean water till it came out clean. I have been blowing it out with compressed air every day for several days in hopes of removing all the water. So far I have the compressor, condenser and receiver drier installed. I may have got further along sooner but my truck decided it wanted some attention too in the form of the fuel gauge lying to me and making me run it out of fuel when it said there was 1/4 tank. Kah!
i must look into r152a.......

Its a very interesting idea. I know I am being "dense" here, but are you actually using the cans of keyboard duster/ compressed 'air'/ whatever were calling it? I see that the small cans of 134 are up to $20 at the cheapest and the bigger ones are about $60. Is your tap something readily available? Dont let me forget, I need to add oil to my system too.....
Also, as an aside, didnt Jaguar convert to r134a in 93? I think my 94 says it originally had 134.

Ok, yes, "duster" is actually pure R152A. My car was a factory R134A model. 94MY. The side can tappers are readily available and work great. Doing this from scratch, you'll need the tools, a set of manifold gauges and a vacuum pump.

I got stopped again! this time, the opener on my trucks' garage door self destructed. and the oil pressure sender on the 94 was next to be replaced (a can of worms in itself) so it came in while I was waiting for the a/c muffler..... Its never ending..... But now I have a good a/c muffler and (I think) all else Ill need, so once I get back around to it -who knows, Is success in the offing? We dont dare speculate.

After the missing belt issue, one more should -have-been- seen hurdle was left. The low side hose that I got was an r-12 reproduction. So that last one-more-thing part I needed was a low side port adapter for r-12 to 134. I found that kit at my local Oreillys and off I went. I put the system on the vac pump again and then added one 3 ounce can of pag-100 oil, then 2 small cans of 134. I opted not to use the 512 mostly because I never got around to getting a side tap. The system seems to be working fine now (knock on wood trim) and we shall see how long it holds up.
