reconnecting fuel lines to tank

reconnecting fuel lines to tank
Ive taken my tank in and out before...this time I am using a good second hand tank which I aquired. It fits and is an xj40 tank, with internal fuel pump...have connected the return line underneath but the fuel out line does not seem to want to go in far enough for the circlip to seat. Any tips...was there any change to this particular join in terms of size through the evolution of the xj40? Is it a tempermental interference fit?

Have you got the clip situated so it isn't (partially) locking on the flat? Try rotating the clip out of the way and push the fitting home THEN re-rotate the clip into position maybe?
The lines should just push in with not too much trouble, I know there's not too much room to work under there but if you can give it a bump maybe that will set it in?
Normally the clips are in the lock position and snap in on insertion, but as you have a stubborn one, try the rotation hack I mention above, can't hurt, right? Just don't lose that clip!

Thanks larry yeah the clips dissapear into the never never if you dont watch out. i had the clip rotated as you say out of the way ready to rotate in and lock...couldnt get the hose nozzle in far enough...took the clip out again and just tried shoving the nozzle in on its own still wouldnt go in the right distance. The tank ive got is xj40 might just pull the line out try it on the old tank see if there is a trick to it....as you well know space is at a premium under there the manual says remove the rear tail shaft to help access I might just do that.
If worst comes to worst ill have to pull the tank out again and see whats what with this join!!!! Maybe its been hit somehow its a second hand tank and was at a wreckers for a while.......up in sydney could have even copped a wack in transit as was sent to me in melbourne

The 'stuffer-pins' are replaceable and still available from Jaguar if they are the same as the X300/X308/X100 tanks.

Well I got em on.... had three spare clips of each variety small and large fortunately didnt go through many. I didnt take the coupling and tail shaft off but i did disconnect the handbrake line that gets in the way.
One or two things I would advise...put the big one on first...they come from the same direction and if you put the little one on first you have to climb the other line over it. Makes it hard to get the big one in.
As a previous poster said...they do push straight on...with the operative word being straight...set in ...then push a bit more the last bit is tight and has some resistance. By dextrous use of fingertips the clips will go in...the straight side of the clip goes toward the filler...put that end in the groove first, anchor it...then push the semi circular side around over the TOP...and bobs your uncle.
Buy some extra clips..prior....prevents lost clip anxiety and trauma.
Now...whats next??

Well the big one popped off but I got her back on again...engine shook the whole car not suprising as I didnt have two vacuum lines connected, to the throttle and regulator. Doh. Back up and running now , very smooth...powerful with new pump, filter, reconditioned injectors (origonal) . All we have todo now is fix abs (warning light on), fuel gauge (showing empty) dash lights (not working) radiator warning light on, left rear door wont lock. Fix heater/air con...
Get the jag wire wheels fixed and put on.....replace all bushes in rear end and diff bearings, change oil and filter in transmission.

I wouldntbe suprised if there is a little bit of seepage over time through the o-rings...leading to a vague gas smell around the place. Have new o rings but will leave that for another day when the choice would be walking over a bed of nails or getting under the car and pulling the fuel lines.....

If you don't have it, this is where you get part numbers for your car.
After you get the part number, do a search for it and a supplier should show up.
