Security Module

My son's jag problems continue.
This is a continued issue that my son has had with his jag. To make an extremely long story short, this is what has happened to date. The jag, blew a head gasket.. After rebuild we were told it was the security system, preventing start. After ripping that out, it still wouldn't start. He has diligently replaced just about everything in the engine. We have spark, we have compression. We have it now, where it will run on starter fluid, but once that is exhausted, it stalls. He says it runs really well on the ether. He has drained the fuel and replaced with fresh. Why does it run on started fluid but not on gasoline? We are oh so close to getting this running. Any ideas on what to do next would be appreciated.

Hi: So the car will turn over (crank) and will start/run with starting fluid. There are a lot more smarter members on this forum than me so I try to keep simple. Fuel delivery seems to be a potential issue. Basic but have you checked for a blown fuel pump fuse? When you crank, are any of the spark plugs wet with gas? If dry, can you disconnect the engine side of the fuel filter, wrap it in a plastic bag, turn the key to the start position for a second or two and see if gas flows? If the bag has gas then reconnect the fuel line and move up to the fuel injector area and disconnect a line there. This is crude stuff and I hope it helps. It sounds like you are slowly making progress. Keep pushing. You'll get it to run.

In addition to what Ren advised, there are a couple of other things you can check regarding fuel delivery.
When you turn on the ignition, can you hear the fuel pump run? It should prime for a couple of seconds and you should hear a definite "whirr".
If not, the next step would be to check the fuel pump relay (trunk) and the oxygen sensor heater relay (firewall).
If either of these relays are jammed/malfunctioning or have bad contacts the pump will not run. Swapping the relays with other similar ones on the car is one way to eliminate potential problems with these components. The sockets of these relays should also be cleaned..
The wiring to the tank can also be compromised and occasionally the problem can be inside the tank fitting itself - there are post in the archive regarding that problem. It is rare, but also a known issue.
If you still can't get the pump to run, the pump itself could be the problem. It is located inside the tank and you'll need to remove the tank to replace it.
The fuel filter could also be blocked. Fuel filter is located just in front of the rear driver's side wheel - it is a fairly universal type and can be bought at any autoparts store for very little cash.
Keep us informed with your progress,
Larry

Well that's too bad - try giving it a squirt of PB blaster or two?
If you can't remove the fuel filter in the conventional way and have to resort to cutting it and using vise grips and a wrench on the halves (or whatever you come up with) - bear in mind that without any pressure in the line the loss of fuel will be minimal - once the initial few drips are out, no more fuel will flow.
When you've replaced the fuel filter and you find the car still won't run and if you still suspect the fuel pump has failed, you can try this old get-you-going (temporarily) trick - If the pump motor is 'stuck' it can sometimes be forced to impulse by giving the tank a few good whacks with an axe handle or a 2x4.
The pump will still need to be replaced, but if it does fire up, at least you'll have the engine start under it's own steam.
Replacing the pump is not difficult, but there a few 'gotchas' in the process, e.g. the fuel line clips, the canister, the wiring, all of which we can forewarn you about if you do have to take out the tank.
First step, if you do decide to remove the tank is to pump out the fuel using an inexpensive fluid transfer pump that you can get at any auto parts place - oh - and some containers to pump the gas into!
If you did the head gasket, these jobs are no challenge after that!

OK guys, thanks for all your help so far. Here is a new issue. When he tried to remove the fuel filter it was so rusted that it broke the fuel line. He is now in need of the fuel line that goes from the fuel pump to the engine, Any idea where one can be had? I've searched the internet and can not find even a picture of it. Every website calls it a hose but it's not a hose it's a metal line. Any help locating one would be great. TY!!

The fuel feed hose part number is EBC8663 (Part 2 in the diagram below), but it is NLA (no longer available) from Jaguar. The upper section near the tank is rubber hose and the lower section near the filter is steel pipe. If you take your old hose to a hydraulic shop, they may be able to use your old tank fitting and build a new hose/pipe for you. Otherwise a good salvaged part may be your best bet.
You can view the part numbers for this diagram at:

Please keep us informed!
Cheers,
Don
