Thinking about letting it go
Friends:
I’m thinking about selling my Jaguar. Perhaps I’m looking for comfort, or pity, or courage, or to be talked out of it – I don’t know. Perhaps no one will respond, thinking me a lost cause! That’s ok, too. In any event, here’s the deal: I know I won’t have it forever, so it’s a matter of when is the best time to let it go. There are a lot of reasons why this is a good idea. It is no longer my daily driver. It isn’t my only ‘classic’ car that sits there to collect dust. I’ve only got a two-car garage, which means that the two cars we actually use have to sit out in the driveway. Gas is prohibitively expensive and showing every sign that the U.S. if finally catching up with the rest of the world for good in the area of cost. And right now, my car is running very well. I would feel good selling this car to anyone. It needs nothing, and that’s a very good time to sell a car.
On the other hand, the car needs nothing. It is beautiful – almost pristine – with only 86K miles on the clock. Apart from an eventual headliner, the car costs me nothing sitting there; and now, because it’s 20 years old, it’s become cheap to insure. It is, I must be clear, my most favorite car I’ve ever owned. It is a special automobile, in incredible condition, whose wood and leather along are worth much more than a couple thousand bucks (if that!) I’d get for it.
On the other hand again, even a couple thousand bucks would help pay down one of the other cars faster. That would help my family financially. I’ve got a lot of kids, all needing much more of my time the older they get – meaning the cars get less time. I’ve got a house and a yard to take care of. I’ve got a demanding job, etc., etc… Having one less thing, even a very nice thing, to obsess about is somehow good for the soul.
Still, the thought of selling it off to some high school kid who will trash it, and drive it inappropriately in the snow because it happens to be a car in his price range (competing with 8 year old Ford Focuses and Corollas)… I just don’t think I could bring myself to do it. Is there such thing as a picky seller? Fortunately, I don’t have to decide anything, or sell anything, in a hurry. I’m sorry if I sound like a fickle lover; I’m really not. This is my favorite car. But like somebody famous once wrote – nothing gold can stay. Is it time to let it go?
I’m going to bed. I appreciate any thoughts you may have.
Cheers,
Scott

Save pictures of it so you can post the real deal over in "cars you would wish you would have kept" in the off topic section.
Seriously, we've all had THAT car that we loved and wished we could have had forever but, reality sometimes has to win. You can however only sell it to someone you want to sell it to.

First off how could you sell such a nice car? But im a teen(18 currently have loved jags since i was 8) and i love Jags and take better care of the car than myself, but im not a normal teen, loving every Jag out there. Just so you know there are teens out there(not many) that would love and respect that car just as much as you .

I say No. Unless you hit dire straits and need the money. This way your selling it because you must, that also helps with your concerns about what is going to happen to it after it leaves your hands. Sure it sits there and collects dust as mine do. Amongst the 100's of other things going on in my life, when I get 15 minutes free time and go look at it, start it, sit in it and just admire it. I'm not sure you could buy that feeling. It's like a friend I visit, and unless I am in a position that I must say goodbye, she is going to sit and collect dust. Even then I would sell everything else I could first! It would be the last to go. To many times in the past I have sold things that I "felt," was the time to go, only to second guess myself over and over again. This time I am having it go down with the ship.

Thanks, Gents, for your thoughts. Mike, no offense intended toward all teenagers. I was like you at 18 - taking very good care of my things; and probably spending excessive amounts of time on my car! Keep it up.
I am torn on this one. I think I need to get into the summer and do some good driving before I make any kind of decision. You're right, mtr... Not in dire straits yet, so no sense of urgency. Perhaps I would/will feel better if I let some other things go first!
cheers,

PS- will report, of course, when and if the time comes...
