Total Newbie questions
So, my XJ40 has no leaper. Poor lil devil is gone. the hood has been shaved smooth, so no kitty. But, what the heck is the hole in the top of the grille for? did the cat go there somehow, when the hood was closed? is the wrong grille installed? I'm lost. I want a leaper again.
And - My front end rattles. Over harsh bumps, sounds like either the subframe is loose, or it needs shock isolators...but, it has stickers saying not to touch the strut mounts...any North American car I own, you can pull the shocks/struts out of the frame without worry....How does one change them without removing the bolts?!

RE: Total Newbie questions
Hello. Some Jag's are factory produced with no leaper, and it appears your XJ40 is one of them. You can buy leapers to have fixed to the hood. A word of caution though: where I am (U.K.) if you're stopped by the police with a non-factory leaper fitted on the hood, you can be required by law to remove it, leaving two nasty holes. Check the law where you are before modifying. As for the hole at the top of the grille, that's probably where the small, flat plate with the 'growler' (Jaguar's face) went.
If you like, I'll send you some pics of mine, as an illustration.
All the best,
David.

RE: Total Newbie questions
The last factory leaper was on the (1967 or so??) Mark II. Jaguar did not install them again until the spring loaded leapers with the 1995 XJ6 and XJ12 models. All the others were placed by dealers or car owners. We have the most common leaper:

or with fancy bag and attaching hardware:

RE: Total Newbie questions
I gave the shocks a wiggle, as that's what the banging sounded like, and they had play. but, when i went to pull them down, it warned me not to touch the nuts. is this just a sticker to keep the unwashed masses from touching their suspension, or is there really somthing sinister lurking if I remove the shock mount nuts?
