Transmission problem
I am at my wits end with a transmission problem with a 1992 XJ40 with low mileage (70k). The transmission only works in 3rd gear. Brought to transmission specialist and they couldn't figure out the problem. Said may be electrical. After spending $600 trying to diagnose the problem, no closer to a solution. If anybody has any insights, it would be appreciated.

RE: Transmission problem
Hi, which gearbox is it, 4HP22 or 4HP24.
I am guessing that you have the 24 as the 22 is not electronically controlled. It sounds as if the 'box is in 'limp home' mode as this would cause it to stay in 3rd gear.
If the fluid looks OK, level & colour (I assume your specialist checked this first & would know what burnt fluid looks/smells like) & the cables are adjusted correctly, I can only suggest trying a known good replacement ECU from a breaker & buy it if this is the cure.

RE: Transmission problem
Hi,
yes also i do agree with the oppionion from MessyXJ as this gearbox is made by ZF in Germany and used also on the P38 Range Rovers 4.0 / 4.6 Liters. The specialist for rebuilds of these transmissions in the UK is http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk and your question is answered at http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/faq.html#a38
Diagnosis: I can pull off in 3rd gear..
Answer: One of the one way clutchs has failed which causes the loss of drive in D, it will sometimes pull off in 3rd as the ECU recognises a fault and puts it in 3rd which is "limp home mode", It needs a rebuild.
Sorry but it seems to be that problem...
