'99' load rating is a bit hard to find in any size suitable for Jags sedans (97 or 98 being more common), and 235/60x15 tires are getting hard to find in any speed rating or load rating.

Seraching for 225/60x15 might reveal some suitable choices?

Is there a process to get a variance from the authorities?

Or perhaps a switch to 16" wheels?

Cheers

Last time I purchased tires for my 92 Xj40 the salesman tried to talk me into Yokohamas. But, I chose P5's instead. Months later I took the car back for a rotation. This time, the store owner (an older fellow) waited on me, he asked me why I selected the Pirellis. My answer was that I had always heard Jaguars handle better on them, and it's the only brand I've ever owned.

"You made the right choice." Was his response. "I've been selling tires most of my life, and I can tell you Jags like yours don't do well with any other brand I'm aware of".

I was thinking about a set of Yokohamas . They seem to make a nice touring tire . Any thoughts?
Our '93, at 195K miles, is on its third set of 16" Yokohamas and they are fantastic tires, and not just "for the money..." They are competitive with Michelins and Pirellis in every way, and the AVID series is generally as quiet or quieter.

Regarding the Pirelli Scorpions, the PO of our '04 put a set of those on our XJR before he sold the car to me, and they are not the right tire for a Jaguar. For one thing, they are not as quiet as Yokohamas, but more importantly, they are not properly speed rated so the sidewalls are not as stiff as they should be for an XJ to handle properly, and I can sense more tire rollover when cornering than I'm used to. That brings up an important point: Lots of Jag owners think, "I don't need tires rated for 150 mph because I'm never going to drive that fast," but the Jag suspensions are tuned for the stiffer sidewalls of V, W, Y or Z rated tires (depending on your Jag model and year), and installing tires rated for lower maximum speeds is a false economy, IMHO.

I had a set of Kuhmo Ecstas on our BMW and they were great-performing tires, but they wore out in just 25,000 miles. I currently have a set of General Altimax HP on the BMW and they have been excellent tires so far, but I don't know if they are available in the taller aspect ratios that XJ40s require.

That's my two cents!

Cheers,

Don

Default About tires

I am currently looking for 16" wheels for my -91 XJ, I will probably go for a aftermarket ones as soon as I find nice ones that fit my car.

Anyhow, the original wheels are in storage as they were metric (390 I think) and they have been replaced with 15" ones that actually do have wrong offset and look terrible.

I will most probably get a set of GoodYears Efficentgrips, I have driven few sets of those on a Volvo and have to say I liked them and they have been durable

After much looking I settled on mastercraft avenger 235/60/15 which is a fraction smaller diameter than the origonal wheel/tyre , is one cm wider and has a 98 load rating which meets requirements. the ball joint and bushes are very worn on the rh side and the tyre rubs in reverse on full lock. I am hoping that once i get the front end done there will be less movement and therefore minimal/no rubbing on the front inner gaurd. The tyres ride well handle very well seem pretty quiet. Not cheap and im thinking may have liked the 215/70/15 better but there you go...

Hi mickvic,

I don't know if you have the equivalent of tirerack.com Down Under, but their website is a good place to at least shop for available tires in a given size. The last time I checked, Yokohama, Kumho and Hankook were still making tires to fit 15 inch wheels in the speed/load ratings required on Jag saloons. The Yokohama Advan series is a personal favorite of mine for its excellent combination of wet-and-dry traction, ride quality, handling and steering response, and low noise.

Cheers,

Don
